Yes, When we purchased our 73, the Onan had been already been removed,
leaving just the powertray frame. I removed the frame, and installed a
3/4'' marine grade plywood shelf, with a 3/4 angle iron brace across the
opening. then we mounted an Onan Emerald 4kw on the new shelf.
there is enough room in the compartment to place a 6kw if you so desired.
with proper placement on the shelf, a hole for the cooling fan/vent fits just
fine. the blower assembly for the 4kw is mounted to the front of the
compartment, so the oil filter and control panel are accessable from
the door. the existing control panel from inside the coach works with the
new unit with no problem.
Exhaust is no problem at all, a short crossover tube was made to fit
and the muffler mounts under the shelf with tailpipe going to the rear bumper
this installation has worked fine for us for 9 years now.
As a matter of fact, I just reinstalled the unit back in the coach to-day,
since it was nice and dry day.
I had removed the Onan to take it to the factory service shop, for a
complete tune-up and adjustment/check-up. Winter is maint-project time for our
coach, when we are not using it, of course.

Hi Folks!

Has anyone had any experience in changing out an original 4.0 BF Series Onan
generator for a new one (not necessarily an Onan) ?
My problem is finding one that is air cooled AND can fit in the existing GMC
compartment.

Thanks in advance for your help...
