You could also try the ol' boyscout approach: One of those cheapie tine/toy
compasses makes a great indicator of current flow and direction. Perhaps not
sentific, but it'll definately tell you if current is present and
'reversing' when it should.
The downside is if added goodies cause a constand current flow anyways
