Someone was raising the question of why pull the whole knuckle when
doing the bearings and suggesting that it is easier to put a slide
hammer on the hub and pull it only.

One possible explantation may be that with the original specs of GM for
the mating surfaces in the hub and knuckle , it was fairly easy to do
this. In my own case one of my hubs had become so loose in this area
that there had at some time been some turning of the hub in the fit.It
appears that the knuckle is quite a soft material. As a result I took my
knuckles to a machine shop and had them put in a sleeve. I did this to
the specs which Ken Thoma, a machinist, uses when he does this. He has
had alot of experience with this, does wheel bearing seminars for
International, and so I felt he knew what he was talking about.

As a result my fit is much tighter and while I might be able to "hammer"
it out, when I tried to this last time, it seemed to be pretty tight so
decided to pull the whole knuckle.I was into replacing a lower ball
joint in any case on the one side. I wonder if others who have sleeved
their hubs have been able to subsequently pull the hubs with a slide
hammer?

P.S.--Emmery--If Jack Hodgman doesn't answer, Sympatico is now Telus.

==========================================

I just installed a "new" knuckle & hub from Ken. I tried pulling the hub w/a
slide hammer after installation & was unsuccessful...a really tight fit.
