Arch,

Thanks for the comments I have not sucumbed to the fear factor even
though it is an easy trap to fall in. I generally evaluate the factual
information I am able to find and make a rational decision based on the
best facts available. Although at times I do wonder if the decision to
drive a 26 year old classic was rational or emotional. However, I will
continue to travel down the road in my Eleganza SE as long as I can keep
it roadworthy. I appreciate many of the personal responses I have
received to date they have been very helpful in the refurbishment
process of my coach.

To reiterate my previous question. Does anyone have the original maximum
RPM torque and HP specifications for the 1974 455? Thanks for your
comments in advance.

Dear Steves

I am fed up with all of this. I have bought all the back issues of
everything.
I have even read them all. I am going to tell you what I think. The fear

factor
is so high here I cant believe most of you still have our ladies. Darn a
final
drive is a final drive----how big is the hole for the bearing--how big
is the
shaft?
How has it changed? Seems like lots of people are driving them. I dont
like
the
fear game-----I know how to play it well. This is what the net does so
well
for
us. It lets us sort it all out for our selves. I dont know if the teeth
on a
3.7 drive
are too small. Cant tell you they are big enough on a 3.42----can tell
you
that
it also was for a car not a motorhome. Sure would like some help here. I
for
one am sick and tired of running from my fears with my lady. It is a GMC

product not something different. Its a 455 with a heavy load---not a
mystical
problem. Heck I am out of here.

Take Care
Arch

But remember it developed 385HP @ 4600RPM and 475ftlbs @ 3000 and had
10.25:1 compression.Big big difference
The 1969 and 1970 toros actually put out 400HP@ 4800RPM and 500 ftlbs @ 3200RPM

In 1971 they dropped to 8.5:1 compression and 350HP and 465ftlbs

1n 1972 still 8.5 compression but 265HP and 375ftlbs

Chuck,

Thanks for the response. I will anxiously await your measurement of the
shaft difference. By the way the 1967 Toro had 385 HP and 475 Ft Lbs
Torque I don't think any of our stock coaches have that axle twisting
power even though we are carring a greater load.

Does John rebuild final drives for others? Can you email me his number
or Email to get in touch with him if he approves.

How is 3M I spent several visits at 3M reviewing new telecom products
over the years.

Steve,
I believe the numbers are 265 hp @ 4,300 rpm and 375 lbs ft of torque @
2,800 rpm. I am in agreement with you Arch to some extent on the final
drive stuff. Some of it is my fault in that what I should have asked is
"does anyone out there have a Toro 3.21 final drive installed and for how
long?" I beat around the bush too long. Incidentally, the article I was
referring to was in the 03/95 Cinnabar newsletter on pg 9, 1st para. on the
page. I have emailed Wes directly but it may be too early to expect an
answer. Hope this clears things up.

Hey,
If anyone is worried about the strength of the 3.21 final drive; let me
remind you about John Smyser's Terrifyin' Toronado!! Two, yes two,
supercharged Olds engines, one in front and one in the rear, each
with a 425 turbo-hydramatic and STOCK 3.21 final drive and also
STOCK CV joints(there were no alternative parts in the 60s.)
Four big slicks and could he smoke em. Never heard of any
driveline breakage. Good American overengineering.
