GMC Experiment

Time for an update on the tire experiment: We got back home yesterday from
GMCMI Mansfield, 1798 miles after I put the Westlake SL-309 tires on the
GMC.

The tires ran as smoothly and quietly as any I've had. However, above 65
mph, they begin to "tramp". As reported, I put exactly 4 oz of Walmart
airsoft beads in each tire. I think I should have used at least 5 oz,
probably 6 oz. These are heavy tires, with stiff sidewalls. It's
probable, IMHO, that above 65 the slight residual unbalance above 4 oz
begins to assert itself; more beads might prevent that effect.

Also, these tires don't have quite the directional stability of the
Firestones they replaced -- I get a little more steering wander now. I
suspect the aforementioned sidewall stiffness is partially to blame. Also,
to my surprise, reading the tires' sidewalls I learned that they not only
have the advertised 2 polyester and 2 steel belt, they also have a nylon
belt. I wouldn't think that would have much impact, but when caster is as
critical as ours is, it may matter.

The only alignment check I've done is to rub my hand across the front tires
treads -- I feel no feathering from incorrect toe.

Overall, I'm still happy with my cheeep tires. :-)

Now don't get me started on my Remflex gasket and other exhaust experiences!

I too bought those same tires and am running 4 oz. of beads. And they also
are smooth up to 65 or so. After the fact, I see they were put on the rims
with complete disregard of the red and yellow balance marks. So I am having
to overcome both the valve stem and heavy spot on the tire. Not looking
forward to breaking them down and rotating or adding beads.

No weights -- I wouldn't even consider allowing that.

I'm taking a pass on this one. Michelin and Goodrich. Made in the same
plant in Canada. Why Canada? Because of the differences in Volatile Organic
Compound (V.O.C's) regulations.
The only way to cure tires during manufacture is with heat which
drives out organic compounds from the tires, and gets the durometer
(hardness and density) specs to the level that Michelin engineers want.
But, heat releases VOC's into the atmosphere, in violation of America's
clean air quality regs.
So, like many manufacturers in the USA, they moved to Canada,
consolidated their brands, and took advantage of the less stringent, more
easily obtainable, Canadian rules. Many tire manufacturers simply went out
of the tire making business, or ceased to exist altogether, with the
subsequent loss of employment that goes with that.
This offshore manufacturing exodus will eventually come home to bite
us in the butt, when no one makes a high enough wage to afford to purchase
these things. (Rant off)

I side with Lebetski - mostly cos that's the brand name my long term tire dealer sells. Price is right, they ride well, and unless you're fulltiming,
they age out long before they wear out.
