The original factory installed CV boots were fastened with a continuous
brass ring. This brass ring was used to clamp the boot to the drive axle on
the inner CV joint, and also to clamp the boot to the drive axle and the
outer race ( or bell ) on the outer CV joint. If the boots have this brass
ring on them, they are the original boots.
When disassembling the CV joints, be sure to mark the components and to
keep the individual parts identified as to their original location.
Example: For the outer CV joint, mark the outer race or bell, the cage, the
inner race and temporary store the balls in some type of container to
identify the ball, so it can be re-installed in the same race-way it
originally was in. The same holds true to the inner CV joint, in respect to
the outer housing, the spider and the rollers.
