This spring time when returning from the Baha (the only place we could
find warm weather) my transducer, speedometer cable began to make a
noise. The cruise control had never worked very well, so I figured it was
time to look into getting a new unit. Before going ahead and getting a
new or reconditioned mechanical unit I spoke with some of the
knowledgeable GMC fellows at the Western States Casa de Fruita spring
Roundup, and it was suggested that I could for similar money upgrade to
current technowledgy and get an electrically controlled one. Those who
had one claimed it worked perfectly and were pleased. I opted to go this
route and have just installed it. I haven't had a chance to really test
it out under all conditions yet, and can report on that later. It does
get rid of all the clutter behind the distributor, and is one more thing
that allows me to have the top of the motor almost free of hoses, cables,
brackets, etc. It makes a neat clean installation. Now, the front, top
and back of the motor is clutter free. Hmmm. wonder if I could eliminate
the tranny somehow, just a thought.
For those who are needing to make a change they may want to consider
this unless it is important to one to keep all things OEM.
I mention Western States Club as this is an excellent club to learn a
lot of technical stuff, and as well have a lot of fun. They also put out a
good Newsletter with further tech stuff.

Claude,

Which cruise control did you install, how does it sense speed, and what is the
engage switch like and where does this switch mount?

Several years ago, Gary (my other half), replaced the original cruise
control with the replacement GM product. It has the resume feature
and is great. He did that at the same time he converted the steering
column to a tilt and telescopic column (almost a necessity with the
difference in our heights - makes it a lot more comfortable for both
drivers). He wrote an article that was published in Motorhome
Marketplace in the January 94 issue detailing this project. At the
same time, he moved the dimmer switch from the floor to the switch
on the column, which made night driving a lot better. We will be at
the GMCMI convention if anyone wants to see what he did.
