In the discussion on disc brakes, the subject of ABS brakes came up.

On my 77GMCPB that is a Caspro refurbished unit, there are two
apparently aluminum cylinders attached to the master cylinder, with
brake lines attached to them. They bear the legend A. B. S. in big red
letters. I was told that they were an after-market device that causes
the brakes to work like an ABS braking system.

Haven't made any really panic stops yet, but the brakes seem to stop the
coach very well.

Anyone know what this is all about?

Olin:

Hate to tell you, but although they were originally advertised as ABS, p. 59
of the March 1996 issue of Consumer Reports (CR)says that subsequently the
"FTC charged the makers with making deceptive and unsubstantiated claims".
CR declared them "A waste of money at any price."

They are nothing more than hydraulic accumulators.

I know a few people who have installed them and claim they are helpful.

By the way, bet you mean that your coach is a Clasco vs. Caspro
refurbished??

Thanks for the reply. I had guessed that was about all the two devices could
be. Since there are no electrical connections to the two cylinders, they
couldn't be much more than fancy connectors for the brake lines!

You're absolutely right about my use of the name "Caspro". I've been
following Nate's engine replacement pretty closely, and the name leaving my
brain as "Clasco" came out my fingertips at the keyboard as "Caspro"! Maybe
it was another one of those "senior moments" :-)
