I just installed the Genrac Q55G this spring. The installation was=20
reasonably easy. It can use the same hour meter and start/stop/prime=20
switch's as the Onan. I only have 50 hours or so on it but so far so=20
good. Its a little louder than I would like but its way quieter than the=20
Onan. Best of all it actually runs!

I would try to stick with Onan. It may cost more up front
but I believe that in the long run they are more cost
effecive. Also it just makes sense that a unit that runs at
1800 RPM as opposed to 3600 RPM should be quieter and last
longer. Try this link.

Heinz has a Generac installed. See his site
http://www.bytedesigns.com/gmc/genset.htm for particulars. Jim Bounds
installed a water cooled Honda in the Dumpster that looked pretty good.
When I talked to Jim he was very satisfied with the results. He's worked
out the bugs of installing it in the genset space.

As long as you have no need for two A/C units and any other high load to
run at the same time you should get along fine with 4kW - maybe even a 3kW
unit. At 13.5 amps, the A/C unit is a 1620 watt draw (not counting start
surge). Two A/Cs operating at the same time runs the power budget up to
3240 leaving you 760W of other stuff that you can run.

You also could manage the A/C units with one of the smart load levelers
that diverts power from one unit to the other. Sorry, I can't recall the
name right now.

I've considered pulling the Onan in the PB, putting it in the Royale and
abusing a 1kW Yamaha or Honda portable generator. I don't need the A/C most
of the time and I could run it off an inverter should that become
necessary. Of course, those few weeks when I need A/C would be a bear
to manage the power loads.

I beleve that Honda makes the best small engines made. I think they may
cost more but the engine may be worth the difference.

Gary,

I love the little 4kw Onan. Gives you twice the available space in the gen
compartment. Maybe I can't run the AC and microwave at the same time, but I
can live with that.

You will find a lot of support for each generator, much of it anecdotal
rather than tested. All three will give you relatively reliable power.
Most comparisons are between a 25 year old Onan and a new Generac or Honda.
THIS IS PATENTLY UNFAIR. A new Onan is probably the best but for sure the
highest priced. Keeping your old Onan running is probably the lowest cost
option depending on its current condition. What ever you do will be right
for you.
