Any one of you ventured into having the House Generator and shore power
change over with a Automatic Relay,
"Transfere Switch". Pluging this in is really outdated.
Thanks for any reply's

Only way to go. Easy to install. You would need a 50amp switch if you are
using the original genset though. They get pricey when they get that
big. Darren

Gary,
I installed a transfer switch last Spring and I consider it one of the
best things I've done for my coach.

Troy-
Which model and how much was it? I am redoing the electrical system (TC-40,
Prowatt 800, new fuse panel, etc.) and think it is a good time to put in a
transfer switch.

Ron,
I got a Todd PS-245L "240 volt, 50 amp changeover" switch for $208.88. I
bought this after consulting with 2 different people at Todd Engineering. It
was
easy to install and it does work. After Onan generator startup it waits about
20 seconds to allow the Onan to stabilize and then switches over. The normal
state for the AC system is shore power. I HATED HAVING TO PLUG AND
UNPLUG THAT BIG CONNECTOR TO SWITCH TO/FROM THE ONAN.
Now I never do that.

I bought it from BR Wholesale. You can call them at 800-900-2468, toll free
fax at 877-4RV-4444 or the web at www.brwholesale.com. They have nice
catalog with 60+ pages of electrical stuff for RV's.

I also installed a TC-40 and Portawatz 1000 inverter. I'm very happy with
how all that turned out.

Ron,
I just noticed that you have a '73. I think the '73 coaches are
30 amp systems. The switch I have is for a 50 amp system.

Others in the past have recommended the Todd TS-30. The
BR Wholesale catalog lists the TS-30 for $76.

Also, I think Byron Maxwell (GMC owner) sells them too. You
can go to his website:

http://www.chaparral-co.com/

I would have bought my switch from Byron, but he was on an extended
trip at the time and I didn't want to wait until he returned.

Thanks Richard. I think that 30 amps is sufficient with only one A/C. I am not sure
what I have. I like the price of the 30 amp unit, especially with gas prices as they
are!

Ron,
I also have the Todd TS-30 switch that I got from Byron Maxwell. I have
the 30 amp cord along with 1 AC unit. I just replaced my old AC unit
with a new 15,900 BTU that uses less power than the old one did. I also
have the Statpower 40.

Ron,
I don't think the TS-30 does all three. I connected my inverter to
the AC system with a relay from Grainger. The relay switches
inverter AC power to selected coach outlets when AC from shore
or the onan is not available.

In other words, relay is normally closed, accessing the inverter. When no power is coming
from the transfer switch (generator or shore) it de-activates the relay causing the inverter
to be the default. Is this correct? Which relay did you use ( I get a large discount from
Grainger because I work for the YMCA)

This exactly how it's connected. The relay also switches the neutral lines
for the outlet circuits. The relay I bought was this from Grainer:
relay #5X847 30 AMP Power Relay $22.21
dust cover #4A079 Dust Cover $14.68

The only problem with this setup is that if I'm running on the Onan and
I shut it down, the relay chatters as the generator slows down and the
voltage decreases. In order to avoid that I shut the main breaker off
for the outlets before shutting the Onan down. I really don't like having
to do that, so I'm going to rethink the hookup.

I've thought of having the inverter power the relay when it is on. I'm
concerned though about the power drain of the relay. Also, it's nice
to have the inverter on and if shore power is interrupted, the inverter
will automatically take over. That's worked fine for me when running
a desktop PC in the coach. The relay seems to switch over fast enough
to keep the PC going even when someone disconnects shore power. In
this mode it works like a great big Uninterruptable Power System.

Thanks for the idea. Let me know if you figure out a better system. I am going to pull together
the parts over the next couple of weeks. I should have my cockpit finished by then. I then need
to realign the bath and closed modules and do the headliner. Fun fun fun.

I have one of those automnatic transfer switches on my Birchaven with thirty
amp service. Was one of those "why didn't I do that way sooner". I used to have
to lie on the floor to switch my service because - 1. Mine is under the
refrigerator (rear bath moder) and -2. I am 6'6" ttall, so stooping was out of
the question. A great addition/
