Gas leak and tank certification

Part 1

Propane type. My granddaughter and I just finished installing a new propane
regulator o the stock tank. Filled it up got home and smelled propane. All
the fittings are fine and tight (bubble test) but you can hear propane
leaking from somewhere on the backside of the tank. I have a lead on a
replacement tank off another coach but is there a direct replacement out
there somewhere?

Part 2

The tech at the filling station was reluctant to fill the tank as it has not
been tested/recertified since 1977. Is there any info on this somewhere/

Please remember this is CA where everything is regulated and or taxed to
oblivion.

To my knowledge rv tanks do not need to be re certified.

If you smell gas after filling that is not abnormal. If you continue to
smell gas and hear a leak that is a big problem. Until you have isolated
the leak do not jump to replace the tank. Open all window and door closures
and turn off all obvious possible points of ignition and investigate with
soapy water spray. Soak everything (it won’t hurt anything) and look for
bubbles.

I talked to Miguel. He recommends pulling that tank, tomorrows project. Four old bolts and one fitting and I'll have my answer. I soaped and soaked all the connections..........nothing.

Len,

While it is true that ASTM code tanks do not need to be recertified, several tanks in GMCs have turned up to have failed welds. While these can be
repaired, finding someone to do it make be real tough and particularly so on California. I may have another in my '73, as it seems to leak, but my
propane sniffer can't tell me where and all the fitting pass a bubble test.

When you remove the shutoff valve to put on the new tank, be sure you use the proper tool. The local propane dealer will show you what it looks like.
Using a wrench will almost certainly deform the brass valve, rendering it useless. Ask me how I know this :) Properly removed, the dealer can sell
you a repair kit with all the wear parts.... seals and o-rings and such. Makes the valve like new.

Your correct about correct tool, however it is not practical as one does
not use that tool often.

Simply take the tank to Blossman - or whomever - and borrow their tool. They're going to sell you gas and parts, they'll lend it or pop the valve off
for you.
