G'day,

Ken Frey installed a filter in the rubber hose that connects the solid line welded to the front crossmember and the mechanical fuel
pump inlet. Its a terrific idea as it keeps crap from getting into the Q-jet filter which is small and is installed "backwards"
vis-a-vis the way it should be installed. Filters should be installed so the flow goes from the outside to the inside; a larger
surface area to a smaller surface area.

When you run the tanks down too low that the light comes on switch to the other tank then keep switching to the other tank till the
light is lit period and hope you make it to a gas station in time. Also pray you don't have a grade to climb. If you drop the tanks
to replace hoses remove the socks and extend the pickups lower and add a large external fuel filter from each tank to take the place
of the socks this way you will have more fuel if you need it in a pinch. Better yet keep the tanks fuller when traveling in Nevada.

Here was my point. The gas tanks hold 50 + gallons ans they do not shrink over time. So there is still 50 gallons storage there. So where is the
missing gallons of fuel. It was my contention that it was still in the reserve tank and you just could not or did not get access to it.

An inoperative fuel selector could cause that problem. Also inaccurate fuel gauge could also cause the problem. You switched tanks when the gauge
and light read empty Not when you actually ran out of fuel. If the tank selector solenoid valve did not transfer when you moved the switch, then the
gauge switched but the fuel kept coming out of the main tank. So in the end when you ran out you still had 7 or 8 gallons remaining in the reserve.

The only other explanation is you never filled it up completely to start with or at your refill point in Tonapah.

Ken,

thank you for your description. It seems the selector switch up-front is
working (at least partially), as the fuel gauge changes, and the low
fuel went off. Solenoid might not. I will see if I can find details on
how to fix that...

Rob asked for a picture of the dripping I experience. The nerd I am, I
did a small video. A good 3MB at http://possy.de/drip.mp4 - it is quite
possible that you must download the file before being able to watch it.

Thanks.

Peer,

If one picture is worth a thousand words a video is worth a thousand pictures! :-)

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/aa-miscellaneous-photos/p51372-fuel-tank-vent-mod.html

In the photo above note that there is are two rubber hoses that connect to the FUEL FILLER NECK, a large one the fuel flows through
and small one for the vent. Since you noted that the dripping does not begin until the tanks are near full I'll guess that it's the
small vent line.

You're going to have to remove the wheel well liner and fill up the coach to see exactly where it's coming from.

How's that for an acute grasp on the obvious! :-)

Very good! :-D

I'll see what I can do on one of the next campgrounds, ie. at least
removing the wheelwell.

Oliver,I took on 61.3 gallons of diesel last night after a 800 mile run with the SxS in tow. Was nice to be able to fuel up at $2.28 a gallon here vs
$2.79 in Williams, AZ. :)
They try to claim that highway 50 across NV is the 'loneliest' highway but I say highway 6 is even lonelier. Have fun.

Peer,

Disconnect the rubber line from the aux tank to the selector valve and see
if any gas comes out. If not you will need to take compressed air to the
line to unplug it. I have had to do this to two coaches.

On a trip out of the north gate of Yellowstone our low fuel light came on.
I decided to see how far I could go with the remaining fuel in the main
tank before switching over. I got 55 miles down the road and had to switch
to my aux tank.

Peer,

From a fellow that fought all the leaks that a GMC fuel system can easily present...
That drip is probably coming from the fill vent line that parallels the fill pipe up to the fill neck. There is about five feet of 1/2 hose that
needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, to do it right, you may need to get behind the panel at the driver's left elbow so you can replace the entire
run. It had become both brittle and porous in mine and was a continual source or both fumes and drips.

You will definitely need to take out the wheel well liner. Actually, I was just looking at the parts book and the upper portion of that vent line my
be metal on your coach. It is rubber on mine.

Here's how to kill vapor lock and a bad selector solenoid all at once:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6198-cane-9-creek-rv-park-heflin-2c-al.html

They're Mr Gasket pumps which have built in check valves./ The relay is powered with the solenoid power line, and has a 12 volt feed from the
ignition through a safety.. with an oil pressure safety or a 'turnover' switch. The switch can be obtained from an 05 Ranger pickup mounted in the
cabin on the firewall directly above the passenger's feet behind a shield. Applied has oil pressure switches. The idea is to shut the pump off in an
accident. Do not use the Mr. Gasket supplied filters, rather buy the Wix exact replacements which are somewhat more robust.

Thanks for all the hints. Especially directly helpful was the information about distance travelled with low fuel. That shows that indeed the aux tank never was selected, except to show the remaining fuel in it.

As I wrote to Rob last night, on the next campground where I don't have to fear snakes, spiders or scorpions coming by. After the meeting with a tick in Alabama I don't want to have more contact with the inhabitants with a different numver of legs than me.
