Chuck,
Although the previous owner removed the Liquid/vapor separator it was
probably not prudent move. The liquid/vapor separator is designed to
prevent liquid gas from getting to the carbon canister. when vent the
fuel tanks and to prevent gas from running into the canister when the
tanks are full to the top. You have a situation that is unsafe and
could in the right situation cause a fire that would make an end to your
GMC. Cinnabar does sell a direct replacement unit for the GMC and as
far as I know it the only one that will do the job as designed. GMC
Motorhome Newsletter June 1999, number 20 from Cinnabar has a detailed
explanation on how it works and why. Part and the cost is $140
and is 50 state street legal for emissions.
Part phone number is 800-720-2227.

Arch, John,

Thanks for your responses.

I was leaning toward returning it back to original specs, and now I
definitely will. One more thing to add to my Cinnabar shopping list.

I suspect it was busted sometime in the past and never replaced, have found
other things that look like quick and dirty repairs.

Later!
