Fuel Surge Tank

Hey Jim K:

Saw this posted up on your website the other day:

Was curious exactly how it works... ie: how are the air bubbles bled off? Is there a fuel return or some such periodic purge solenoid involved? Or
would you just open the valve I see in the pics in the top from time to time?

If it's manual, wonder if something like this could be used to automate the valve opening?

valve?

Getting off the highway on a downhill exit low on fuel always gives my wife a heart attack, when the engine stumbles in my coach.... Hasn't been an
important enough issue to make it to the top of my to do list, but with a part easily available, I may consider moving it up in priority....

I like to keep it simple and reliable.
There is a bleeder valve one can adjust to bleed off minimal fuel and when
the air enters, it will exit the chamber considerably faster.
You need to have a standard electric pump applying pressure into it to work.
I recommend you use a 1/4" fuel hose and run it to the same location as the
return line of your Throttle Body.

I agree that the use of a surge tank such as this is likely to be helpful:
I've been running a homemade equivalent, though somewhat more complex,
surge tank for 10+ years, starting before I installed EFI. Mine is a
10"-12" section of 6"OD 1/4" wall aluminum tubing with welded-on end
caps/mounting brackets. There are several threaded ports, high and low,
some of which are plugged while waiting for me to find uses for them.
Those used are a fuel inlet line and a fuel outlet line on the bottom and a
return line near the top. Notice I don't call it a "fuel return line"
because it may pass "air" at times if the incoming fuel contains bubbles
(probably vapor). The fuel inlet line is fed from either the main or aux
tank, dependent upon the dash "tank selector" setting, through its
dedicated Carter 4070 electric pump and a pair of check valves leading to
the rigid fuel inlet line to the "surge tank".

With the carburetor, the fuel outlet line connected directly to the
carburetor, eliminating the mechanical pump. With EFI the fuel outlet
feeds the fuel filter ahead whichever of the two high pressure pumps is
selected by the same relay controlling the low pressure pumps. The
selected pump feeds the EFI. The EFI's return line returns into one of
those additional ports in the surge tank.

The surge tank's return line feeds into the drain port on the bottom of the
aux tank via a rigid line protected with a robust steel guard attached to
the preceding crossmember.

I've put many miles on the system with both a 455 and a Cad500 engine with
never a problem due to the fuel system.
