I also had this same problem. For years my fuel gauge was intermittent. I
cleaned all the connections, replaced the senders, checked and rechecked
the wiring and switch. Eventually I removed the gauge cluster and soldered
the connector pins to the circuit board. That fixed the problem. It turns
out that the connector pins are just press-fitted into the circuit board.
After years of vibration the work themselves loose. Reseating the connector
seems to fix the problem so it looks like a bad wire or connector. But
after a while it works loose again and becomes intermittent again.
While I had the gauge cluster out I also soldered the pads for all the
other connections. Hopefully that will keep things working for a while. I
took pictures but haven't had time to create a web page. I will be happy to
e-mail them to anyone who is interested.
