Fuel Pump/Holley TBI

Background: A couple of weeks ago, I reported my Holley TBI fuel pump
would not self prime with the main gas tank slightly under 1/4 full
(1/3 on aux). Fortunately, it occurred near my driveway which
unfortunately is on a hill.

Results: Able to blow gurgles into the tank, was able to suck gas out
of the aux tank with some clear tubing attached to the changeover
valve, new Holley fuel pump. Still no gas pressure.
Filled the tank, 2 gal at a time, until the pump self primed. This
required the tank(s) to be 1/2 full (added about 10-12 gal).

Called: Holley techline, they agreed that the pump will not self prime
easily without filling tank. Caspro, good self priming pump for carb
system only with flow through design, 5 psi (TBI requires 15 psi).
Howell, say they have a pump (FP206) that will self prime for $125.
(might be worth a try)

Recommendation: Anyone with electrical fuel pump, especially TBI --
Running below 1/4 tank and on an incline can cause air into the pump
and may not self prime without adding lots of gas.
I suggest, look for a gas station at 1/4 tank, switch to aux in case of
a hill (I believe with our tanks a quick stop could have the same
effect).

Thanks for all the ideas. A most interesting experiment. May get a
Howell pump and try to recreate the condition (near home ).

I have the Howell pump. Its mounted low near the selector valve. It
self-primes very well in this position. I have run my tanks dry (by
forgetting to switch to the other tank in time) and it self-primes in
seconds after I switch, even if the other tank is very low. I am pretty
sure this will solve your problem.

Bill,
Thanks for the info.... I believe thats what happended to me when I was
parked on a slope. I have an eletric fule pump (unknown mfgr.). Were you
facing NOSE DOWN on the slope when this all happened? Where's a good place
to order it?
Thanks again... this clears up alot of my questions on my problems.

Nate, yest I was NOSE DOWN. There's a link to Howell's on Patrick's
gmcmotorhome page. I received this email from them:

{Our FP206 pump is the one for the application you have and the cost is
$125.00. We have not had any priming problems , however if your pump is
mounted in a location above the mid level of your tank this could pose
a problem for you.
Thank You

Their number is 810-765-5100. I'll probably get one and try to run out
of gas in the driveway to test it.
