Frustrating Weekend

Here's a review on youtube where you can see the filter internals... You can see it has a magnet, filter media, and a bypass valve to allow the
system to still function if the filter clogs:

He mentions something about the filter rusting at the welds, though it looks more like discoloration at the weld than rust to me....

That's a good price, Ken... Supposed to be a good filter, too. I'm in the process of plumbing one in on my transmission cooler route... Figure it
will be easier to swap out and inspect periodically than the internal filter....

Here's some stuff I had found on Bob's the oil guy when I was considering using it in my trans cooler loop.. Supposedly, these are internal tests
performed by FoMoCo:

One series of tests of a 1/2" filter on a 5R110W transmission on a tranny dyno, the maximum pressure drop across the filter was ~4psi @ 3.5 gpm flow
WITH THE BYPASS VALVE DELIBERATELY BLOCKED. The test results say "The cooler flow reduction was marginal and could not be measured with the test set
up." Another Ford test listed flow 5/16" clean element @ 7-8 psid, 70F = 1 gpm 5/16" clean element 18-20 psid, 70F = 2 gpm 5/16" loaded (per J-1858)
element tested @ 4-5 psid, 150F= 2.5 gpm Vehicle testing was done on cars at +20-+150F, cooler case in & out pressures were 2-4 psig higher than the
production system w/o fitler. At -39F ambient, the test sheet notes: ... "no effect to lube flow, cooling or calibration were evident." The bypass is
rated to open at 4 psid (+- 1 psid). Ford tested them and found the bypass began to open @ 4.0 psid and was fully open by 7.14 psid. Filter collapse
was rated at "above 100 psid" by Ford, with the low test of 125 psi and a high of 160 psid in forward flow. In reversed flow, filter collapse was at
30-60 psid. Filter burst pressure, of 12 filters tested, 10 reached 600 psig and two cracked right at 600 psig In thermal tests, @ 275F, the filter
were subjected to 120 psig and did not leak. At -40F, they passed the same pressure tests. THey were also passed a 3000 hours @ 275F @ 60 psig test,
and 300 hours at -40F @ 60 psig, as well as overtemp tests @ 328F @ 60 psig for 5 minutes.

Hey Ken,

Tried to PM you, but the Forum site says you are not accepting PMs... Be careful on the Magnefine filter you bought on Ebay... A lot of them say
"Replacement for Magenfine" or "For Magenfine" and are actually knockoffs of the genuine filter... Now, they may be fine to use, but wanted to make
sure you were aware just in case they are not of the same quality....

Yeah, I know there are more fakes than real products out there. The ad
said it's "Magnefine", with no qualifiers. We'll see what happens.

I ordered one from NAPA and they sent a Cardone one instead with the small screen. I found and ordered a Magnefine on Amazon.ca.

I just bought (2) unbranded units which were manufactured in the U.S.A. The price was so cheap I think I will dissect one.

It's certainly possible this is the case... I know there has been a rash of counterfeit parts in the last several years... NGK Iridium plugs and MSD
units come to mind....

But these are not purporting to be counterfeit... Just "replacement" or equivalent parts, which seems more stand up to me. Like NAPA rebranding Wix
filters...

I looked around a bit online, and it appears the "Old Style" Magnefine's had a Chinese made knockoff out there... But I have not found anything on
the new style filters...

Is it possible to just use a remote, spin-on filter adapter and inexpensive disposable oil filters? Seems like plumbing the rubber hose to it would not present much of an issue.

Ford pickups from a few years back, (10 or more) had a dandy looking stand
alone filter/cooler combination unit in the power steering circuit. Looked
to me like it would adapt to most anything. I saw one in a men's mall when
I was there looking for something else. The filter was replaceable, had a
Ford part number on it. Should be easy to track down via internet.

Yeah, I'd definitely send back the Cardone. It looks as if Magnefine
also used the case Edelmann, etc., use, but at least theirs has a bypass
(all those in that case may have for all I know). I'll still feel better
with a welded steel case.

If I were starting from scratch, and younger, I'd probably use an
adapter and spin-on transmission filter (they seem to be marked as dual
purpose when advertised on the 'net). At this stage, and in the area my
filter can most easily mount, the sealed in-line unit is more suitable.

I just replaced a power steering pump and filter on a 2006 Sterling cement mixer. The filter is in the reservoir.

Much of the heavy equipment has remote spin HYD filters. I do very much like that idea as well, I just never thought about it. You can't get any
easier.

This reply got lost in the junk on my computer (by the way, the "MagneFine"
filter I ordered from eBay turned out to look like one, but was actually an
"IFJI", or something like that -- another Chinese knock-off):

Pretty impressive. The filter media is hundreds of times as large as the
screen in the Cardone and the magnet's 20+ times as big (Cardone's is about
1/2"OD with a 3/8" ID and about 1/8" thick -- hardly magnetic). Having the
bypass would probably have prevented my problem. I'm glad I chose to order
one earlier today.
