Front Wheel bearings

All,

I hate asking questions that I should be able to determine for myself but sometimes I just don't get it! For our front wheels, I have rebuilt both
upper and lower A-arms (sandblasted, inspected, painted, new polyurethane bushings, they look really nice). Bearings seemed fine on the coach, but put
the hubs on my bench and drivers side has a "catch" in the bearing, turns ok except for a "catch" once in a while, feels like something is amiss so
was planning on replacing. So here is my question, I know that Timken Set23 is the recommended bearing (correct?). How many do I need to order? 2 or
4? Cant really tell from pictures if the "set" has one or two bearings in it. Also is there a bearing puller/installer tool loaner program in affect
anywhere? If not what is the recommended tool?

Answering questions is why most of us are here. (The others here and some of the same are here to ask.)

The "catch" maybe either foreign material in the bearing or that one of the races has come out of line. It does not take much, but this sure it the
time to fix it. It either outer race comes out easily, come back here for advice. They should not be loose in the knuckle.

The Timken set 23 is two roller bearing assemblies and a spacer. (There is one set per side.) That spacer used to be set specific, but they
processes have been improved so much that I am told it not longer is. But keep the parts in order as received just to be sure.

There were several bearing puller sets available on loan, but I never paid much attention to who and where because I expect I won't need them.
Arrange to borrow a tool set. I have seen this job done with standard tools and it is very difficult.

Also, while you have things apart, borrow the jig and drills to put a grease Zerk in the hub. That way future greasing can be done without removing
the bearing. You will have to do some modification to the spacer mentioned above, and that can be difficult as Timken now hardens that piece.

Glad to see that you are staying up on the coach's maintenance. This will reward you with miles of pleasant touring.

Matt dont you mean that "Set 23" is one bearing and one cone (or outer race) plus spacer per box....meaning a quatity of 4 boxes is needed so four
sets.....2 per side = one inner and one outer set on each hub.

Matt is correct in that it comes in a set of two bearings and one spacer.
The spacer is required between the two bearings so as to set the correct
pre-load. That is why it is called a set.

Usually a "set" means you get a matched bearing and race.... not 2 bearings and 2 races. If you order rear bearings for the hubs they do not come as a
set so you have to order the 4 pieces ie: inner and outer bearings and then the races that fit those bearings per hub. So a front wheel bearing job
would requires Timken "set 23" x4 and the rears require inner races x4, inner bearings x4, outer races x4 and outer bearings x4.....total 12
pieces....no?

No. The Set 23 includes 2 wheel bearings and the spacer. So you only need two sets to d o the front of the GMC Motorhome. You are correct n the rears.

So this is what you get in the box plus the spacer....    "bearing SET23-LM104949E/LM104911 bearing"

1 spacer

These are manufactured and QC'd _as a set_ and meant to be used _as a set_ in order to maintain the proper bearing clearance after assembly. Absolutely do not mix and match the cones and the cups within the set and by all means do NOT buy your own cups and cones individually and try to use an old spacer ring with them. My PO tried this in order to save money and ended up making it less than 100 miles before the bearing seized up and destroyed both the knuckle and the spindle on the driver’s side.

As Emery and others have pointed out you need qty two of Set23 to do both front wheels.

Also, oe need to check the bearing clearance once it is pressed on the hub.
Sometimes the hub is little larger and it will eat up the pre set clearance.
Like I said, call me and I can assist you, no obligation to purchase and it
will save you lot of problems.
The way we do the knuckle and hub assembly, we warranty it for 80 to
100,000 miles without adding grease.
I learned this back in 1984.

I see from your signature that you are in Orlando. If you want to bring your hubs/knuckles to Winter Springs I've got a Jim K bearing tool that I've
used a few times. I don't loan my tools out (I usually learn from my mistakes) but you can use the bearing puller here in my garage or I can change
the bearings for you, doesn't matter to me.

I will be at the GMC Sunshine Statesmen rally in Clermont this weekend so there may be a delay replying.

Thank you for your generous offer, Winter Springs is really close and I
love seeing others coaches and talking to them as well. I have ordered the
bearings but they have not yet arrived. I will also order today the double
seal from Jim K. Once they are in I'll shoot you an email and well see if
we can setup some time. I was planning on making it to the Clermont and
still may, but I have a funeral to attend on Saturday and you never know
with these things. Thanks again.

Thanks for the tool loan information. Bob Heller has generously offered to
assist me in replacing the bearings (he has a tool), and I will be setting
up some time to do that with him, so for now, it looks like I do not need
to borrow the community tool (thank you for being the custodian). If that
changes, I'll use the link and get on the waiting list.
