GMC netters - I am working with a coach owner off-line, and she has posed
this question:

>Now for my question I hope I put it across right. I have 2 operating
manuals
>one is 7521A the other is 7821A I am guessing that one came out for a 1975
>and the other in 1978.
>For front wheel bearings 75 says (bearings sealed) replace if bad.
>78 says if wheel bearings bad replace if not repack with grease.
>From everything I had read everything refered to all wheels needing to be
>repacked at x amount of miles.I was assuming all 6. When I checked at a RV
>place who has his fathers 73 there they did his bearings and said you don't
>repack front as they are sealed. What is right sealed or not sealed for
>front. Did they make a change at some time ? Hope you understand what I am
>asking. Oh and also what kind of a chore is it to repacking only the back
>wheels do you need special tools? That's all for now .

I was able to handle the question re. repacking the rears, but this is the
first I've heard of sealed front bearings. I do have the 1977 owners
manual, and it mentions servicing the rears, but no mention of the front!

I also have the Maintenance Manuals & Supplements X-7725, X-7525A, & X
7525B. I find mention of cleaning, replace, or repacking the rears, but for
the front, I only find "Replace every 24,000 miles".

Were there model years that did have sealed non-serviceable bearings, that
are only replaced and not repacked? If so, when was the change made? I
just received a matched set from Cinnabar for my 1977, and they are not
sealed.

TIA for your help.

have owned Olds toronados since the first 1966 and worked on them all up to
1981. I have never seen a front sealed bearing. The constant velocity
joints for the 1966 were different and they did change those in 1967.
