Is the bearing tool really necessary to remove the front hub bearings?
I was reviewing the bearing replacement procedure in the manual over the
weekend and it appears that, if you properly supported the hub, then you
could push the bearings out with a press.

Also noticed that GM recommends tossing the output shaft attachment
bolts and only using new bolts for replacement. Is this really
necessary? Is there a better place than GM(NAPA? Car Quest?) to pick
these up?

I'm getting ready to tackle the front end rebuild(CV's, bearings and
brakes) and I need to pick up the *necessary* additional tools.

You absolutely need the bearing tool to remove the bearings. You can put
them back on with a suitable size socket. It you attempt to take them off
with out the correct bearing puller you run the risk of scoring the race of
the bearing.

I have rebuilt the CV joints etc on my toronados several times and have
always reused the bolts. They are used in a shear function and are not
under a lot of tension.
