Front Axles

On my last trip, I noticed a clicking coming from my front driver side. It seems, through research, that it would be my CV joints. Any other suggestions? Also, June 30th starts the big 2 week family camping vacation so, I've got to do something now. I've never replaced one, but reading through all the links, it doesn't sound that hard, for a fair to middlin' wrench monkey. Is it recommended to do both axles? I saw someone on e-bay selling complete GMC axles, is it worth going that route or doing the whole shebang myself? Thanks for the input, I can't ruin the vacation or I'm out of the running for father of the month.

I had mine rebuilt in town for $79 and back the same day, painted and
ready to install. My other cv joint needed replacing the very next
year, so i would do both!

Peter, you might also want to check that there is no interference between the cv boot band and the cotter key above it.

What kind of a place rebuilt them for you Peter ??? Always good to know this stuff?

Be careful with your rebuilds. Most re builders just take them apart,
grease them and replace the boots. Here is a link that shows the
wear on the joints that can cause the clicking and torque steer.

There are no new ones, I think the listing you saw was the last of them.

You might have to find used CAD CV joints that are not worn.

The person who originally talked me into a GMC was an original GMC
mechanic for a dealer in the 70's. He now owns a service station in
Louisville and this is who he has been using for years for rebuilds.

If you decide to do it yourself, here is one way to get it done. Not that
bad a pocedure but it does help to have another pair of hands.

Another Welcome.

It sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun. I just purchased a 75 Palm Beach that I am in the process of redoing, and am having a ball. It's in Des Plaines, IL, very close to O'Hare Airport, so I'm glad to see more and more midwestern people populating these pages.

As I've been getting more and more into the bowels of mine, I have found that the interior leak repairs should be priority one before you start any woodwork. A good interior drain system on both the upper and also the beltline horizontal channels should go a long way to minimize any damage from water leaks which will eventually occur.

I'm still working on the mechanical systems on mine, but I figure I'll eventually be down to a bare interior before I'm through.

Most of all, enjoy the project and welcome once again.

I have 16.5 aluminum wheels, not sure the make. I have not bought anything yet. Reading all the different cv posts is making me think to much. I called autozone, and the 1975 Toronado axles are 69.95, complete. I'm thinking of going the way Ken suggested. I need to do something by tommorrow at the latest. I'm going to call around to see who gives the best warrantee. I'll let you know how it goes.

Pete - many of the auto parts places will give you a "lifetime"
warranty but that really might not mean much if they supply a crappy
rebuild and you end up doing all the work over again in a short time.

I posted this about 3 years ago:



Some of the rebuilders just clean up the parts and reassemble them
again with a new boot. You have no idea what is inside the boot
unless you take it apart as I did.

Some rebuilders put in slightly larger balls to take up the slack
with the work parts. However, you might still have grooved parts
that don't turn well especially when going around corners.

I guess you just take your chances on rebuilds. Good luck.
