Front Axle Ratings

My 75 has a 4200 lb. maximum front axle rating.

It seems I heard later model front axles were rated for more weight.

Is this true ? If so how much more and would anyone know what components
were changed ?

Without checking the book, IIRC, the 1978 GVWR went up and this was
accomplished by adding gussets to the frame.

That is about all I have handy at the moment-all from memory and that
ain't too reliable these days.

I seem to recall seeing a diagram somewhere but it would have been years
ago. Maybe Jim Bounds or Alex Sirum, who have done frame-offs, may have
done a '78 and would know.

I would imagine you could strengthen the frame but I personally would try
to stick with the weight carrying capacity that GM gave me. I say that
tongue-in-cheek as my wife loads the coach up with her genealogy records
when we go off for 4-5 months at a time and we usually exceed the GVWR by
500 lbs or so!
