We are redoing our 1978 Royale and want to paint the front and rear
headliners a different color. I am not sure whether the headliners are
a plastic or a vinyl material. I am concerned about adhesion. If
anyone has tried painting these and had either good results or poor ones
I would appreciated hearing from you. Thanks in advance

I painted my original plastic seatbacks with an aerosol product sold under
the brand name Sems. It is a two step process, with the first product
being a temporary surface softener to allow the second step color
application to impregnate the surface. It did a great job, and there is no
flaking, peeling, or fish eye. It is available in a multitude of colors,
and designed for automotive applications, such as dashes.

Good luck!

I , too, have a 1978 Royale with vinyl covering on the ceiling. I have not
tried to paint my ceiling, as it is still in good shape, but I deal with
vinyl everyday. ( I have a sign shop and cut vinyl letters). The only
paint that I know of that will adhere to the vinyl is Krylon. It still has
the magic ingredient that bonds with and actually becomes part of the vinyl.
Now if that stuff is plastic, I dont know if this will work or not. Be sure
to test in an inconspicuous place first.

Although I don't have access to my brochure until I get home from work,
MarHyde makes a super good vinyl coating. Bobby Moore, from Louisville,
used it on his whole dash among other locations. You apply it with a
foam headed brush and once it dries, you can't detect the look from
original. It's available in a number of colors.

I'll transmit the product details after I get home this evening.

I too, have used SEM vinyl spray and I want to second Chuck's recommendation.
Just remember to clean and prep the surface no matter what you use.

One of the things I liked about it was the clear that I could use to protect
the color coats. It comes in gloss and in satin so you can choose how shiny you
it to look.

Enjoy!!

Why not try melamine. It's about 1/16" thick, available in hundreds of
colors, about 3-5 levels of glossiness ( from mat to mirror), comes in 4' x
8' sheets, can be scrubbed with heavy cleaners ( mr. clean, windex), and
can be glued with contact cement to mdf, plastic, metal.

Hi Arch,

I live in Canada and I have bought melamine sheet from Home Depot and
Beaver Lumber. Both Stores are lumber/home improvement type stores. You
should be able to get this type of store or a store which sells counter
tops. As a side note it may not be cheap, I paid $60 a sheet last fall.

Bye For Now
