Fresh water tank

I was in the process of changing a water heater element and had my son
refill the fresh water tank. All the suden water was coming down the sky! at
the time my head was buried alone side of the hot water tank and water was
falling inside the the back of the shower fiberglass. Turns out that the
fresh water vent on my 76 PB goes up the inside of the shower fiberglass and
then somewhere else. I can see it go up but to where? If this is to go
somewhere please let me know.

Hi,

On my '74, that vent goes up about 10 inches and stops. It goes no further.
Kind of a silly way to vent a tank, fill it up and you get water all over
the inside. So what you have is factory original!

Once I get my new tank installed, that vent will be pointed outside!

My vent (it has a screen on it) is just hanging in the space by the hot water
heater. I didn't know what it was for about a year. It doesn't go anywhere.

Typically GM just shoved a small screen filter into the end of a hose
and taped it to a vertical vent pipe in the wall between the bath
module and the rear bedroom. Mine went up about 4 feet in the air.
If you just shove a garden hose into the fill opening it leaves no
where for the air to go except up the vent hose. When the tank is
full the water pressure from the hose will shoot water up the vent
hose (as you have found out the hard way).

There are two things you can do. 1. You can buy a filler nozzle
that is a narrower diameter piece of plastic hose connected to a hose
fitting that will screw onto the end of the garden hose. This will
allow water to come back alongside the filling hose when the tank is
full.

2. You can remove the vent hose and attach a long piece of tubing to
the tank fitting, bring the tubing around the back of the GMC to the
rear of the water filler housing. My plastic housing had a small
fitting on the back side and on the outside a small built in plastic
grille about 1/2" in diameter. I drilled the back and tapped it for
a 1/8" pipe nipple/hose barb and connected the tubing to the hose
barb. Now, when I fill, I can feel the air rushing out of the little
opening next to the fill spout and when the tank is full some water
will come out.

Chuck,
The vent for the water tank has always at one time or another caused
problems. The first things that Buskirk/Rush does when redoing a coach
is to replace the hose with a longer one that they loop up above the
filling inlet and then run back out thru the LP tank area so that it
drain outside. That what I did and I no longer have to worry about
flooding the inside of the coach with water.
