My diligence has paid off! I purchased a coach today for $1005.00, I
did not leave out a 0!

It was a sealed bid to a college surplus auction, I have not seen the
heap yet and may have a pile of parts. They till me all the tires are
up but it does need a battery.

Going to pick it up Monday, gonna try to drive it home, it may prove to
be an interesting ride.

I am bringing Nelson Wright, a fellow GMC owner, for ground support as
well as moral support.

Very excited about this, can't wait to get started on the Co-op mobile!

Will let you know how the forced march goes.

Scott,
As most of these kind of situations happen, a good friend called me from up
north when he heard of a coach going to the college surplus lot for
auction. Another friend (who owns a GMC) called hsi son-in-law who worked
at the college and he leg worked the deal. We found out about the bid
closing 40 min. before and winged the 1005.00 bid.

I've got so much other work going on right now that I'm not sure what I'm
going to do with it but I'm still glad that it happened.

If I can get it road worth by the next Sunshine Statesmen rally, I'll stay
in it even if I have to use lawn chairs and sleeping bags!

I'l post Tues. and let you know what kind of heap it is.

Sorry it took a while before I had anything to report on the beast I found.
I finally drug it to the shop this weekend and I can tell you it was an
incredible journey!

The coach had belonged to Florida State Univ. and was their portable
production studio. Unfortunately for me it had not been used or even moved
since 1989. Needless to say it had some problems.

After the backfire and subsequent carb. fire we were able to wake up the
motor and trans. which seem to work well. I had to field strip the carb on
the concrete under a street light but was able to clean out the fuzzy stuff
from inside. No brakes and no fuel from the tanks but hey, I can handle
that stuff! I was determined to move the thing from its resting spot and
was able to drag its numb carcus 4 feet dragging the seized rear wheels!
One good thing is that the engine & tranny had to work well to drag the
rest of the coach!

Many other problems, too many to list but I can tell you I really have my
work cut out!

We mounted the thing on a roll back tow truck and made our way to Orlando.
Yes it hung over the back of the truck by 6 feet or so and would have made
an interesting write up on a police report if we had been stopped. Got
some unusual looks from passers by, the coach was bigger than the tow truck!

We made it home Sat. eve and deposited it in an area where I can get to
work. I really didn't need something else to divide my time but am very
pleased with having it. It has a rear door, benches, a sound room & an
equipment rack that could support the Queen Mary. The interior is very
useable for my purposes after some serious cleaning and strategic renovations.

There is only one window besides the slider windows in the 2 doors. A very
unusual set up- I like it.

I hope to get it in shape for Myrtle Beach. Would like to drive it to the
next Sunshine Statesmen rally but I think thats a bit too much to ask for.
Will keep yuo informed as things progress.

Sounds like You have Your work cut out for ya! You can

Does anyone have a listing of the Coachman ID #'s and what they stand for?
Any help or where to go to find it would be appreciated from one who's ISP
mail service has been down all weekend. Going nuts without it. Finally was
able to receive but still couldn't send till today.

What is a "Coachman ID #'s"? Example.

Is that the same as the commonly used VIN (vehicle identification number)
nomenclature?

Roger, your best source for correct info probably would be Coachman
themselves. I would guess they have a number system that covers the wide
range of products they make.

I only list the GM number in the Registry. BTW, I will eMail you with the
info you requested on the late 1976 Transmode you asked me about. I
suppose it is a Coachman Royale?

He didn't even know what a TZE# was and he probably does not know if it is a
Royale or not. That's pretty much all I have to go on except for a
miscellaneous description of condition, etc. He does say he is the third
owner.

you'll have the before, during, and after, available to show
customers what can be done. It'll also be an inspiration to the rest
of us. And I want to see what that oddball looks like NOW :)

Dave,
This is the first basket I have shaken up for myself but I am not new to
scraping the slime off of olds beasts! I got that "white dumpster" patched
back together and it made it to Alabama without incident!

I must say though, it is a new thrill to know this one is mine. My son
empted all the trash out yesterday and I'm going to start on the mechanics
very soon.

It.s exciting finding neat stuff burried in cabinets and under trash. My
son found a 100' 50amp. cable that cannot be picked up by one person. I
also found a box of all parts needed to do a complete brake job still in
the boxes. As it turns out, they had purchased them all from me over 5
years ago and never opened the box! What a small world!

Are you going to be at the next Sunshine Statesmen rally, I'm really going
to try and make this thing mobile for that. Of course I will be sleeping
on the floor, that is if Janie will go along with that- pray for me.

You know it! I do not have a digital camera but I do hace a scanner and as
soon as I get the pics developed I will post on my web site.

I will have one of my mech. techs. start on the brake work tomorrow so I
have hopes of making our next rally in Fla.

Filled the dumpster today with %#@*, the inside seems to shaping up well.

In all the years of working with GMC's, I have not had the opertunity to
work with one quite like this one and would love to show all of you the
progress, stay tuned!
