We have been "camping" for the last 45 years, from tent and on. Sand, dust,
water and mud are part of the environment, especially with kids.

Our last SOB was carpeted which was impossible to keep clean because of the
sand and dust that turns to mud when it gets wet. Spilled things leave
spots. We had it steam cleaned each time we returned from a long trip. When
we redid out GMC we smoothed and covered the floor before laying down a
single piece of polyethylene wood planking design. We chose the wood
planking design because it had lots of variations in both color and
texture. It also had a soft rather than high gloss finish. We vacuum/sweep
the floor. If the dust gets wet and turns to mud, we can easily mop it up.
We have an entry rubber mat that is used outside to knock stuff off the
shoes. Then we have these rubber backed bathroom throw rugs at the door and
in the bathroom. These get shook out and/or washed as we travel. They are
also easy to replace. We also have rubber backed runner rugs that were made
from the same material that is on the step up/driver platform. Once during
our summer trip, these got full of sand so we took them out knocked the
sand out. After our trip, the runner rugs were pulled out, shopvac
vacuumed and washed on the driveway. We have only put 9,000 miles and one
summer with the grandsons at the beaches but find it very easy to take care
of this combination compared to installed rugs. Shoes are kicked off at the
entry so we are always walking on rugs.
