I tried to PM you, but it seems you do not allow them. Anyway, tell me about the logistics of attending a Rally without a motorhome. Did you stay in
a motel? Did you register? Did you have a couple friends introduce you to the scene? Just show up and say "Who has a Motorhome they want to sell!?"

Hi Mike (just N of Grand Rapids):
Ok - here was my experience:
Called the gal in charge (Kim Weeks) and told her of my interest. She was (will be) very accommodating. Drove my car to the convention site, I registered upon arrival, found a motel room close by, and let people at the convention know I “was looking”. I got very good advice from a number of new found friends - was also warned - “you will have to listen to a lot of horror stories - just ask them afterwards about all the good times they have had w/ their coaches”! Gr8 advice and it still applies to newbies (take note)! There are usually a number of coaches listed for sale at the bulletin board. Also many people know of friends or acquaintances who are ready to sell.
My advice is know what you are looking for (year and model and upgrades) and about how much money you want to spend - be methodical and do your home work before arriving.
A good looking, good running, cross country ready coach will cost in the range of 30k. A fairly good coach in need of some repairs or upgrades will probably run tween 20 to 25k.
If you are a mechanic and willing to invest sweat equity, you could find a bargain, but be sure you factor in repair time! I know many who bought cheap and then spent 3 to 5 years before being ready to go on the road!
I have owned 5 GMC coaches in the past 6 years (now down to 3), so have some pretty strong opinions that I could share. Call me if you so desire - 3 oh nine, 3 six 3, 66 oh nine.

P S: I will have my best coach ready for sale in about 4 months - a 76 Eleganza II 26’ rear bed side bath model - cross country ready.
P S - 2: The GMC MH community is a Gr8 group of helpful people who really want you to enjoy your coach - many will become your best friends in short order!

information for you. Read it all, its good stuff.

Here is my 2 cents worth.

Buy as much of a restored, usable coach as you can afford up front. Enjoy it while you upgrade, repair, and restore it. As mentioned previously,
safety items first!

I'm a 3-year "newbie": we're not retired, and just completed our 20th camping trip in the coach this past Labor Day weekend (yes I count everything).
We have done a lot of repairs and such to keep it going, but the joy in using it provides additional motivation to keep the project going. We still
have a long list of projects to complete on the coach, but its good to have a rolling project.

Hey Russel, Thanks for the advice. You're correct about receiving some very useful information. I agree wholeheartedly with you. We are looking
for something we can use while we restore. I do not want a two year project to restore before I know that I even like camping in a motor home. This
will be our first.
