First Post - Wiring 78 Royals Neutral Ground short trips GFI

So does mine I think it's a problem with an open ground or neutral wire I just plug it into a regular outlet

In that case, you just have to get methodical and run it down. It should be one of 3 things

1) ground and neutral wires connected to the same bus in the breaker box
2) incorrect wiring on one or more circuits that shorts the ground and neutral wire
3) a bad spot in the wiring where insulation has become exposed and the neutral wire is ground to the frame

If you're familiar with using a multimeter to test for resistance and some basic wiring, than it's not too hard, if not, a good electrician should be
able to run through the process quickly, and correct the *common* problems almost as quickly.

When I first tried to plug mine into correctly wired 220V socket it produced very loud hum from the "buzzbox" converter, loud enough to hear outside
and make me unplug it immediately. After much testing and tracing and disassembling, I found the white wire on the water heater also had the ground
attached there by the crew that replaced it in the GMC's previous life. Fortunately, it was a good learning experience in 1973 GMC ac wiring and that
knowledge has prevented me from creating certain circuits that would conflict with the generator wiring.

My 23' had a Junkerac genset and a wall - type switch to change from shore to genset. When it failed, I put a 50 Amp relay in which the genset pulled
to go to generator power. The 26' is GMC all the way through. I've seen no need to change it to a transfer switch, the genset plug is where I store
the shore power cable plug anyway.
