Erv,

Glad to hear everybody got out and the coach can be repaired. I'm a first
time GMC owner, too and an engine compartment fire is one of the scariest
things I can imagine.
Hope everything works out with the insurance and that Cinnabar gets your
coach repaired soon so you can enjoy it some more this summer.

Subject: GMC: First GMC Rally - and a HOT ending

Erv, I had a similar fire but not a sever, thank goodness. My failure was
that the GEN lamp came on, lost power and went a drifting. When I rolled
into and truck stop a quarter mile away I pulled up the hatch and found the
wiring on top of the engine on fire. It was the alternator cable and the
alternator was flaming also. Put out fire but ended up badly burned hands
from trying to pull the wire off the alternator.
The moral to my story in to worry when the alternator lamp comes on, replace
the alternator and replace the isolator. I also used a heavier gage wire and
routed cable away from beside the carburetor.
Also the lake of power- check your fuel filter.
 
Hi Erv,
Check the heatriser plate on the intake manifold and
see if you can tell if it was leaking...that might
have been a cause of your fire..maybe not.....it just
seems to me this could be a serious problem with these
motors.
