Just went for my 1st real trip in the GM with no real problems. First time
in the mountains and drove it in the rain, sunshine, & heat (low 90's at
least). It did scare me twice. It had sat while I worked on it for 3
months and the batteries must have been low. When I first started, the
little wire from the alternator got hot and melted plastic terminals at the
battery isolator which I could smell. Next morning it would not start. For
a while, I thought I had a short. Turned out to be just a loose cable to
the starter. Averaged 8.96 mpg on 80% back road/20% highway use. There are
2 things I want to double check on however. One thing is a noise coming
from the wheels. I think its the oem wheelcovers clicking? It was loud
enough to make me stop and check for hot wheel bearings and the like.
Everything was fine that I could tell, just a click/clack as the wheels
turn. The other thing is the trany temp. On flat pavement, it would peak
at 170-190. But in hilly areas it settled at 210. I was wondring if this
is about normal. It has the largest Hayden tran oil cooler I ever saw, but
don't know which one it is for sure. I never monitored trans oil temp in
the past and have nothing to gauge this against but it seemed high in
relation to some posts here that seemed to put the max temp at 195 up
mountains out west. TIA, walter bright, 76 GB.
