interesting article in this months Cinnabar GMC motorhome news on final
drives. i know there has been a lot of discussion about what drive to use.
Wes Cauglan says that Cinnabars 3.42 is the only one that will fit in the
final drive housing with the larger and stronger pinion gear that
significantly reduces failures. Anyone have any experience with this?

Has anyone ever had a pinion gear failure on one of these final drives that
wasn't caused by something else (ie pinion bearing) failing first?

Tom,
I have the 3.55 final drive installed by Buskirk's. 6K miles and no problems.

I am on my third transmission... Don't ask me why. the first one was
then I bought the coach. It was just old. The update included a 3.5
caspro gear change. That lasted two trips (6k miles), then in Calif it
want out. The next one in Calif was done by a fine firm. Did all the
stuff! Heavy duty torque converter, teflon bands, heavy everything.
That lasted 4k miles until I went to colo. It seems a pump went out and
damaged the trans. Fortunately, I was in Boulder Co, just miles away
from Winterfeld. Darrell swears by the 3.42 and told me the 3.5 gear
change puts too much stress on the trans. Thus that's why my trans went
out. They had a rebuilt trans and they put it in. I must say, the firm
in Calif stood by their repairs and paid for the repair and redo of the
trans. I had a 3.42 final drive installed and took out the 3.5 gear. I
pick up the coach in July and will let you know. I read the article in
Cinnibar and am glad they agree with what I did. So, I can't tell you
but I do have a set of 3.5 gears to sell if anyone is interested.

If anything the 3.55 gear puts less strain on tranny. Other than
running the engine more in the torque curve which is good, the higher
drive ratios do not add any load to the tranny. The reverse is true,
the high gear ratios (3.42,3.55 & 3.67) makes it easier for the
motor/tranny to pull the the GMC down the road.
