That sounds like a set up error. Final drives give fairly easy to
diagnose indicators when they start to wear out. The symptoms are
usually noise under load, noise under coast, or constant noise.
Another noise that can be made is a wah wah wah type noise and that is
usually an indicator of worn bearings. It's present at any speed under
load or coasting. It's been so long I can't remember which is an
indicator of what. You should have the gear wear pattern inspected by
someone who knows what they're doing. This is a specialty area that
most mechanics don't get into. It can be done with about 30 minutes
worth of labor and a change of fluids & a gasket. At any rate, it
sounds like you have a problem.
