Good morning,

just received my statement for August, and they charge $23.25 for a
single Golden Gate Bridge crossing, as well as $15 for a single Richmond
crossing.

Anyone from the SFO area know if this is correct? I was expecting to pay
something around 2-5USD...

G'day Mate,

I'm still a bit jet lagged and up at 3:30 today.

Yep, $23.25 is correct:

Don't know where the Richmond crossing is.

I was under the impression, that the GMC only has two axles. Didn't
someone post something in that direction when it came to tolls in NYC?

My read of the vehicle code is that we have 3. But that would vary
depending on the exact wording. California would also imply that a Tatra
T-815 would have 1 axel per wheel, as each pair are offset slightly (kinda
weird trucks).

Peer,

I define an axle as a shaft that a wheel rotates around; a GMC has a front axle, a middle axle; and a rear axle.

I'll bet someone will say that means it has six axles.

A minor POff here and a reason we avoid the Mackinaw Bridge.
We get billed the same toll as a 46,000# Greyhound bus. When I wrote to the bridge authority, their reply was that it was a weight based toll. (My
Ass)

It seems that toll people can not be expected to have any common sense let alone understand SAE standards that say that an axle count is determined by
the active suspension points on the frame or chassis os the vehicle in road transit state. So, they think it is three axles, don't try to influence
them with facts, they have made up their minds.

I am just glad that they don't try to count wheel spindles, then we would pay for six.

The Ambassador Bridge to Canada charges us the same rate as a passenger car.

Some places now do actually charge a weight based toll, but this is Michigan, you can't expect us to be up to date out here in the west.

G'day,

Since each bogie arm has a pivot point wouldn't that meet the SAE definition?

I got to thinking. I wonder how long it takes the tag recognition software to run. A bit of tape would turn 3s to 8s, and a couple of other tricks
and they would bill someone else. And, while the tag photo shows a bit of the car, the average toll worker has no idea what GMC is anyway. Modify
the tag, drive on, and remove the tape at the next rest stop.

Oh Sheesh he's joking.

FWIW we missed a toll going to Chicago due to construction craziness. They always say just run them and they will bill you so ok NP.

2 months later, no bill.

Wife called them and tried really hard to pay it, but they needed to know the date, time and which toll booth is happened at.

Right... sure, we only know approximate time. they couldn't search by license number either.

It was Father in laws car, and hes gone now. Problem solved :P

I've noticed that it seems somewhat popular amongst some GMC people in the
eastern parts of the USA to drive considerable distances to avoid paying
fees and tolls on roads and bridges. I kinda thought that it was a contest
or sport of some kind. But, maybe it is just a frugal nature. Some might
call it, cheap. Beats me.

Well I hope it was a joke but you never know. I recall another GMCer once posting that he bought his batteries at Walmart and just before the 3 year free replacement was up he would bring them back and say they were bad so that he got a fresh one for free.
He said that he had been doing that for many years.
He even warned that you should find a Walmart without an auto shop so that they could not test it. I know that that posting was not a joke.

Rob,

I a word, NO.

In the original design, there is only the single airspring. That and the casting make it a single piece. There have been other vehicles produced
with similar systems, but they are labeled as a single axle with tires in tandem in stead of dual.

The toll booth operator goes "1-2-3" and that's that. They aren't being
stupid--they are just observing the obvious. Automated systems detect the
passage of tires through a profiler. We cannot expect any acknowledgement
that a GMC is a 2-axle vehicle.

Not to be the devils advocate but if we are really 3 axles then we are limited to the 55 mph speed limit. I thought that the three axles had been
litigated in Calif and the GMC was supposed to be considered two axles.

Which is fine, except that you have to have a way to communicate that to
toll operators (and not just in toll booths). We can't expect them to just
know that a few thousand vehicles on the west coast are different that all
the other millions of vehicles they deal with.

The documentation for that determination would be a good attachment to a
letter appealing the toll to the toll operator.

The real answer is to stop basing tolls on the number of axles as a
surrogate for weight, and base it on the actual GVWR. That used to be
marked visibly on vehicles larger than passenger cars in many states. That
is something RV groups can take on if they want to.

Automated systems can weigh vehicles these days, too. A weight sensor in
the pavement isn't any more expensive than a profiler.

One reason GMCers on the east coast avoid toll roads is that there are so
many of them and it adds up. But anyone who lives in north Dallas will
confirm that some western states are catching up.

I drove a GMC coach from NC to Idaho in June; was on Interstate 70 thru
Missouri and then into Kansas. Took the portion of Interstate 70 into
Kansas that was a toll road. When approaching the toll booths, there were
about 5 lanes and all had back upped traffic of 5 or 6 cars/trucks.
Having not been thru them, I picked one and waited in line like everyone
else. When I get to the toll booth, they only had a ticket machine there
and I pressed the button, but couldn't reach thru the coach's toll window
to take the ticket. Since traffic was backed up behind me, I didn't have
the time to get out of the drivers seat and go around the coach to get the
ticket; I just drove on. When I came to the end of the toll road, I told
the toll booth attendant what happened and I was charged the max since I
had entered the toll road at the farthest end and I paid the toll. Weeks
later, the seller of the coach got a ticket from Kansas for their toll, so
long story short, Kansas gets their tag recognition ticket out in about 5
weeks. Had I known she received the ticket and paid it, I would have told
her to let me handle it since I would have written to Kansas that I paid
there toll and they could stick it where the sun doesn't shine.
