Fan Clutch revisited... and apologies.

I'm finally starting to get somewhat back to normal... maybe :-)

During last summer's trip there was quite a fan clutch discussion as I
changed a couple of them along the way.
Part of that discussion was me sending the old clutch for disection.

Unfortunately I screwed up and lost address, etc. of the disection volunteer
[g]. I have it sitting on the bench and if you're still game please email me
the address and I'll get it out next week.

In the meantime, a fan clutch update.
On that same trip last summer I had one more failure on the trip home. I
wasn't worried as I had 2 spares with me. Little did I know... I stopped in
a Rest Area to make the switch and disaster struck. My new spares were
perfectly matched except that the fan mounting hub was just a smidgeon too
big and hence a 'no fit'. We made sure of bolt pattern, but nobody thought
ro measure clearance to slide the flange (???) through the center of the
fan.

Now I was stuck with the one that had just failed and the one that failed a
few thousan miles previously. That particular one had been sitting face down
in the coach for a little more than a week. During that week the temperature
in the coach probably reached 100+ a few times (Bakersfield, CA). That's the
one I reinstalled. All I can suppose is that it rejuvinated itself by
resettling the goop inside. Perhaps the extreme temperature helped. Not
sure, but it's still on the coach some 10k+ later.

Does this mean a fanclutch can be 'repaired' by sticking it in an oven? Who
knows. I don't have any plans to try it :-) I just make sure my spare is of
the fittting kind [g].

And so it goes....

GM and Hayden.
Other makes I don't even count as they only get used in emergencies.
I.e. had to an AZ and another Chain flavor in use last year. They replace
them, i.e. lifetime warranty but I find them definately inferior.

The one I currently have back on is a GM and so is my spare.
Keep in mind... I run a reverse rotation flavor since change to Serpentine
so the numbers aren't same as stock.

With 20/20 hindsight... and if memory serves me correctly a failure usually
occurs shortly after it was necessary to remove clutch for some unrelated
mtce, etc. Perhaps just coincidence but it's fact that if a new clutch stays
in place without disturbance it lasts a long time.
