I am (trying to) replace the fan clutch on my '77 Kingsley 455. The
notes I have say that the Hayden 2797 is the replacement to use.
HOWEVER, the flange that the clutch bolts to has a 3/4" centering pin
and the Hayden 2797 only has a 5/8" hole. Pound as hard as I can I can't
get the 3/4" pin in the 5/8" hole. Is there another Hayden # or some
other solution???? Thanks in advance.

I used one from cinnibar, and it works great. Seems you need lots of air
moving, and the unit they sell is good. I could not find the hayden when I
was shopping.

Emery, Thomas, Richard...
Thanks for your help on the fan clutch. Apparently water pumps have
different size "shafts" which the clutch must slip onto, 5/8" and 3/4".
Many of the part numbers floating around (including the Hayden 2797) have a
5/8" bore. Mine of course has a 3/4" shaft. I called Four Seasons (who
makes Hayden, Napa, and most other brands) and got the NAPA number 771303
which is their heavy duty model and it has a 3/4" bore with a bushing for a
5/8" shaft so all bases are covered.
One more item I can mark off my list!!! Replacing the Sol-Aire is the only
remaining nasty job before paint.

Gary, I have a 78 Royale with the 403 CID engine. I too, saw the GMCnet
thread on using the Hayden #2797 fan clutch, and replaced mine with the
2797. It bolted right on, but it was too much clutch for my fan. It never
went into "quiet" mode. I replaced that one with a Hayden #2747, and it is
similar in operation to my original, but still "roars" at speeds below
45MPH. Apparently, it has a 3/4" dia. hole, because it came with a bushing
that I used to "fill" the gap between my water pump centering pin and the
matching fan clutch hole.

This week I was at Jim Bounds, and he said that the Hayden #2705 was the
number that matched up to the original GMC. I assume he was talking about
my 403CID, and I didn't ask whether the 455CID was the same. My parts book
is not with me, or I would check it for you.

Keep up posted.

I too just installed Hayden 2797 on 76 Edgemont w/455 engine
Centering pin on mine was 5/8 and fit perfectly

I replaced my 78 Royale, 403 cid engine fan clutch last October with =
the
Hayden 2797. It bolted right on also.

It comes on every time I start the engine and goes off around 35-45 =
mph.
Haven't driven in warm weather yet though.

As an aside, one individual I know, runs a stock Toronado type water =
pump
(with stamped steel vs. cast impeller) on his 455 cid coach engine and =
says
he has no overheating problem. Anyone else try it?? Maybe another =
myth
eliminated???

I've got no evidence to help slay this myth, just more theory. The larger
the impeller, the more energy it requires. Also, if the impeller is too
large(is capable of moving much more water than the system will flow), then
the water is "churned" and the pump begins to heat the water. I doubt that
the additional heat would be a concern from a cooling standpoint, but it is
wasted energy. Everyone's looking for more horsepower. If these water
pumps have oversize impellers, then maybe here's a source of "free"
horsepower.
