Gary,
The easy way to work on them is to remove your wheel well Liners. Just
remove the screws at the wheel well edge and there is one screw in the
middle top inside the wheel well. For more room you can remove the
wheel from the side that your working on. This puts you right at the
manifold. If you have a 403 in a later model 77-78, you can get them
from the top. If your using the stock exhaust manifolds the only gasket
I recommend is the FelPro 1439 gasket set along with the High Temp
permatex copper gasket silicone sealer. For a little bit more you can
get the solid copper gaskets that should last forever.

Gary
Take out the wheel liners to give yourself a better view. 3/8 socket
will do this in a hurry.
Good luck

I don't speak as an expert, just from experience. GM did not use manifold gaskets.
The "experts" claim it enables better heat xfer. I have tried gaskets & gasket
sealers & found they do not do an inadequate job of sealing, especially if there
is any pitting in the block.
Caterpillar makes a product called "High Temperature Manifold Sealer". It is used
instead of gaskets & completely seals any pitting. If they use it on their heavy
equipment, I feel it can easily handle our "toys".
PN is 2P-2333. A bit pricey - about $40 for a pint can which would do several
manifolds.
