I'm trying to get the Exhaust Manifolds off
the 74' 455 engine. What a Pain! Broke the
head off two bolts, Got Two out Sucessfully,
Six Left. All with striped heads. Im planning
to use a cutting torch to get the rest. Will
the post left after cutting the heads off be
very hard to remove????? Has anyone broke one
off at the block???? Thats My main Worry!

Maybe when you put it back to gether, Anti-seiz might be recommended.
Check out the Copper Gasket from Mondellos. Chuck

Good Idea Chuck. As long as they hold tight. Im
lucky in that the rest of the exhaust system is
in " Like New " condition. The MH sat for over
ten years unused.

You need to soack them a lot with a penetrating oil before you try and
remove them.

OK. Should I heat them also. I Have a Mapp/Oxy
set I got from Home Depot. Gas only last about
10 min when cutting. A little longer when just
heating.

I suggest penetrating oil, then heating, etc as it is much easier than
getting them out after you break them.

You might want to try the following on your broken exhaust studs:

1. If any of the stud is sticking above the head put a nut on top of
the stud and weld the nut to the stud.
Keep the nut slightly off the head so there is a little room
between them.

2. Now take a heavy hammer and give the stud a couple of hard hits
straight on like you are trying to drive it
through the head. This helps loosen the threads. Finding room to
swing the hammer may be a problem.

Hi Don,
Well all of the Bolts left are rounded, So resigned
to cutting them off:(
Will still try rapping on them with a hammer after
the Manifolds are off.

Rob:
If you break one off at the block, first weld a small a washer to the
bolt then weld a nut to the washer and bolt. The washer is for more area
for the nut to hold onto. Use a small rod 3/32' 6013. After welding take
a wrench and move the welded assmembly back and forth slightly until it
starts to come out. The heat from welding will aid in removing the broken
off bolt. Be careful that you don't weld the bolt to the block. I suggest
you practice on a test piece of iron first. It'll take a little practice
but will have results.

I hope that it doesnt come to that. Did You drill
those bolts out while the engine is installed?

I recently had to remove my left exhaust manifold. I got lots of
information and advise from
GMCnet and from the GMC Motorhome International Newsletters. It was pointed
out that the
center bolt is the one that will most likely break. This is because the
other four have a hole that exits
at the spark plug indent and can be lubed with penetrating oil. (Some
people have drilled a similar
hole into the center bolt hole.) Put the oil in and give it time to
penetrate, then heat the bolts and add
some more oil. This should work. I was lucky, all bolts came out without
breakage. Using the advise
from the newsletter, I had the manifold resurfaced, cleaned the mating
surface on the head with a
wire brush and emery cloth and reinstalled the manifold using "Permatex"
Ultra high temp RTV silicone copper gasket maker. I also used new grade 8
bolts with the old thick washers. I also used unflavored milk of magnesia
as an anti-sieze solution. I read that its been used for years in the
aircraft industry. So far it is working well. The RTV silicone copper
gasket maker is suppose to transfer heat better that the fibre gaskets.

Rick I got to disagree with you on the use of Permatex ultra copper gasket
High temp. It works even when the surfaces leak with anything else. It did
on mine.

Rick I use the mr. Gasket steel gaskets (*the cheapest ones) and put
permatex on both sides. I do not like the felpros they lasted only about 500
miles on mine.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing, my left manifold cracked and
my mechanic said that what you had was normal. I had appx. the same
results. Just expect to drill out 50% of the bolts. Replace using
anti-seize compound. BTW, are you going to reuse your old manifolds???
I'm looking for a left side.

working on the coach. I swore in front of
her back when I was 19...She slamed on the brakes,
pulled Me outa the car, Cuffed me up side the head
and left Me on the side of the road to walk home....

Rick, understand you surfaced the manifold then re-installed using the copper
gasket w/o a sealer in order to maintain proper heat transfer but anti-seized
the mounting bolts? Appreciate your imput.

OK, I got the Exhaust Manifolds from Terry. They
look good. I'm going to sandblast them Myself.
Then have them Milled flat. Should I get them Ceramic
coated? Who does this. Would I be able to find someone
local? What do they look like when done? What color
would they be? What about painting them? How much
should I expect to pay for the Ceramic Coating? Do
they coat the inside also? I'm hoping to avoid having
these crack like the last one were! Someone suggested
letting the motor run for 5-10 minutes before shuting
off....Anyone do this? I still have a few bolts to
remove...Were going to weld nuts onto the broken bolt
studs, Then try wrenching them out!
