What can be done for a stripped out exhaust manifold bolt hole? Is there
something other than a helicoil? Are there solid inserts made for these
instead? Some magic silver bullet would be nice here...

Emery,
Nothing wrong with them... I just don't trust them in certain
applications. I have had two come out in a couple of my old Harley's with
aluminum heads (came out of spark plug hole right along w/the plug) and then
they were a pain. I found solid inserts and they seem to do alot better job
of staying put. Just wondered if there was anything new out there or if
somebody found something that would be easy for my uncle to use to fix
his... thats all.

What's the matter with using a Helicoil? Used one on my Jeep manifold years
ago and its worked well ever since.

Nate,

Had another idea going home this evening, what about the fan clutch?

If you remember, we reused the HD fan clutch from your other motor. It
checked out good and looked pretty new. Maybe something is loose in it and
causing the idle noise!

Wish I were there to hear it in person, I feel sure we could localize it
easily.

Let me know if this helps,
