Exhaust manifold gaskets - not stocked anywhere

Our coach still has the iron manifolds.
I was going to start assembling the new stainless exhaust system that I got from Applied to replace the rotting out mufflers.
Now that the engine and transmission are in the frame in front of the coach, it makes sense to bolt up to the manifolds and work aft....
I did save the flanges, but I did not save the gaskets (aka exhaust donuts).
No problem, last time I needed them, they were right there in the parts store. . .
Guess what, I Need 2 (one for each side of a 455), and there are two shops that each say that they have one...
Those shops are 30 miles apart and in different directions.

I placed an order and they should be here Wednesday.

I called a number of the bigger muffler shops, one does not stock them at all, the other MIGHT be able to match them up if I was to go 11 miles to get
there, but I did not retain the old ones.

So it goes.

This is why people more and more do their shopping on line. Local stores can't stock everything in an ever-expanding universe, I understand. But when
they "don't want to know", and take many days (and sometimes a shipping charge) to get you the maybe right part, I just fire up the old computer and
go to Amazon, Rock Auto, or, when I really want the right (or rare) part, surf or phone to Applied GMC. "Buy Local" is a sad joke these days.

This is NOT intended to be a criticism of anyone, particularly those whom
have been a big help to me personally.
It strikes me as somewhat peculiar that there is an unwillingness to
go what we in the Western USA consider short distances, to chase down
needed items for our 40 year old coaches. I frequently drive 100 miles or
more round trip to purchase sausages and other meats that we enjoy.
30 miles round trip for a lunch with friends is a common practice as
well.
I guess because we have counties larger than many eastern states, that
our perspective might be skewed.

That seems to be more
Common issue. And as states elsewhere, is why I am starting to shop more online too. The local stores do not have things in stock, and they do
not have the ability to have employees that know. I pretty sure I have 2 spare doughnuts hanging up in the garage because I found the same issue.
So when I ordered I grabbed 4. Same deal with the manifold gaskets. Try to find a remflex when you might need one.

People complain about not finding a 16.5" tires. That is the least of worries on part availability.

Applied and venders have everything, but you are at mercy of shipping cost and time.

Jim,

Your perspective is great.
But it annoys me to have to drive for over an hour and buy 2+ gallons of fuel to pick up two 5$ parts.
Fortunately, I worked in free shipping.

You don't have to live in the West to belong to the syndrome. I grew up in rural central Al. Everything was in Montgomery so it wasn't a drive, it
was a habit. Likewise, the car was an appliance, not an extension of the ego.
It will be interesting to see how online merchandising fares with the recent sales tax ruling from The Supremes.
