Exhaust Leak

Last weekend, on my annual sand dune trip, the coach developed an exhaust leak at the engine. I had a chance to investigate a little further when I
was getting ready to leave the GMCSJ Christmas Rally this morning, and discovered a substantial crack in my left exhaust manifold. I know the left
ones are hard to come by, and I'm wondering if anyone has a good one available that you might be willing to part with for a reasonable price?

The other option, of course, is to install a set of headers, but that's just another large expense. I already have Jim K's 3" aluminized, two
muffler, exhaust system, so the headers should be a simple bolt in installation. Being in my ninth year of GMC ownership, I realize the simple jobs
are rarely as easy as we hopr they will be.

Any sage advice?

Left side (driver) is easiest to find. 455 and 403 are same also Toronado. Cast J. Cast number 407103.

Have some people swear headers are the way to go, other have told me they were not happy after changing to headers because they create so much heat
that they struggle with cooking stuff uner the engine like wires, speedo cables and spark plug boots. ??

You coach is in good shape other then that drivers side manifold I think you can probably find a good manifold and stick with that.

My friends coach has headers, and I did not notice major heat problem, and actually his coach seems quieter then mine. But I stuggle with exhaust
leaks too.

Jim K's "Doug's Headers" claim to have a high temp ceramic coating that is supposed to not radiate as much heat as the stainless ones. I wonder hoe
effective it is.

You had ceramic coated thorley headers on The Pig and standard crummy
looking ones on my eleganza 2. Have not noticed a difference in insulation
needs of the motor accessories.

My coaches both have headers. They're both different, I suspect the 23' ones are Thorleys and the 26' are Someone Else's. I don't see a lot of heat
relatively, but I've not run a manifold engine for comparison. Both coaches have a fair amount of woven heat fabric around wires and cables which
seems to protect them.

Johnny, your 26 is probably a set of Mannys stainless headers. You can remove governor without removing header on his.

I have coated dougs headers, and no heat issues.However Iit had them since I have had the coach so no point of comparison.
To be honest though, in other applications I have found they still radiate a LOT of heat, whereas header wraps did make a difference.in underhod
temps
Ran back to back dyne results with bare and wrapped headers and saw now poer difference. However in car, I do think the drop in underhood temps
helped

This is funny to me becuase back in highschool all the hopped up cars with headers leaked and the ones with manifolds didn't.

Tru dat. Although the headers I remember in high school leaked because the
collector was too close to the ground and would drag on g outs.
