Well this bolt removal isnt going anywhere. Im thinking
I should remove the Heads. Starting with the intake
manifold. This could use some new paint. I havent
messed with anything like this since I was in high
school. Can I remove the heads without messing stuff
up in the motor, What is involved in a project like
this? Should I get the heads refinished while I have
them out? I know I would need to tork the bolts.
It just seems like I would have a better time of it
if the heads were removed. Its getting too cold out
there and not enough room to work.
What do You guys think?

Rob be extremely careful with your intake manifold if you want to remove
it. There are not many around and it is very expensive. It must be
torque properly or it will leak your anti-freeze at the front and back.
The exhaust manifolds need to be properly torque also, strongly
recommend the solid copper gasket supplied by various outlets. I got
mine from Mondellos. Either of these places can be big trouble if you
are not careful. The one thing that probably is over looked at this
time is the proper jets in the carb. With our new gasoline it is
imperative to have this done by a competent person. I had mine rebuilt
in Los Angles. If I would have been thinking farther ahead I think I
should have gone with fuel injection. These are available also. If you
think you really need the heads re done look to see what they are. If
they are "J" then you might want to replace them. There is a great deal
of information on the internet about olds engines. The article in GMCMM
last month and this month are very good reading. Thanks for listening
Chuck

Take off the heads and take them to the machine shop for a valve job and let
THEM take out the bolts. They know exactly how to do it and will chase the
holes etc.

Since the heads are now off might as well have them surfaced at the same
time, unless they are the J heads and than get the C heads. Put in manley
stainless steel valves, stellite valve seats if the heads do not already
have them, block off the heat risers etc.

Since the heads are off might as well go to variable ratio rocker arms and a
new hot cam.

Since the heads are off might as well change the intake manifold and go to
fuel injection.

Boy those seized cylinder head bolts can really get expensive when they
stick. Thats what I am telling my wife! Good way to get the goodies.
Explain that you don't want the coach to break down late at night in a seedy
section of town and put her at the mercy of ruffians. Works every time.

Chuck,
Thanks for the info. Will the heads be stamped with
a "J" or some other letter? Where should I look for
this stamp?
Thanks,
Rob Teed

My local machine shop will recondition the heads for $244 a set. They are
good and do extensive work on NASCAR engines.

Are you aware that Mondello also sells the Edelbrock Parformer aluminum
cylinder heads for the same price ($1399). The aluminum head is a much
better head and does not have the exhaust crossover. You can see it at
http://www.tcsn.net/mondello/edelhds.html
