Got home kinda tired today, but wanted to try to make some progress on my
GMC in case I get to go to Fredricksburg this weekend. Thought I'd tackle
the generator.

First, the #$$%@ sender would not budge from the elbow that it screws into.
Then the elbow snapped off, leaving a stub threaded into the filter adapter.
I was expecting to have to take the adapter off, but got lucky---an EZ-out
pulled the broken piece right out.

Then I decided to drain the crankcase. Got my trusty 3/4" combo wrench and
applied a CCW torsion to the drain plug; it came right out. But it didn't
un-thread from the boss. Oh, no, that would have been too easy. The entire
boss came out of the pan. Looks like it was just pressed in. I guess I'll
get to R&R the pan and silver solder or braze the boss back in. Guess I need
the practice.

I have those days all the time! I'm disappointed if everything goes
right. It just ain't natural!

Good luck with the pan and sender. We're pullin out at first light for
Fredericksburg. The modem in the laptop went south on me so I won't be
able to check mail while we're gone. We'll see you if you get there.

I have always thought that my GMC was the only one that's jinxed. I've had
a three year run of things that just never happen. If I had known what I
was in for the day I bought it I would not have taken it even if it was
free. So far I've never been on a trip without a show stopper breakdown.
The closest I've come so far was our trip to Bar Harbor last year when all
I had to do was replace a starter and tinker with the careburetor a couple
of times. The starter before that was in South Miami on new years day in a
neighborhood where all the windows have bars. I've rebuilt so many things
that I keep telling the wife nothing else can go wrong; then something else
wierd happens. So far I'm champ.

The latest sequence was that I've always had a way too lean idle. After
disassembling the Q-jet 3 or 4 times and not being able to find anything
wrong I noticed that the manual showed a four hole gasket under the carb
while mine had a one hole gasket. So out of frustration I bought a 4 hole
gasket to try and the idle problem was solved. Also went up two notches on
the jets so it now runs the best ever. I think I always had a sticky power
piston which complicated the matter. You tell me why anyone would install a
wrong gasket under a carburetor!

Anyway, at this point I was ready to finally spend a summer camping instead
of mechanicin'. Then when I top up the tanks for the Memorial day weekend I
find the tanks are leaking and are going to need dropped and redone. Then
we get an extended period of rain and there are leaks everywhere that need
immediate attention. Interior needs redone anyway so the quest for leaks
leads to removing all the furniture out and stripping the interior to the
frame. Then I notice the pipes on the Suburban furnace are rusted where
they come through the wall. Since this could be dangerous the furnace is
now on the bench and I'm trying to figure out if the combustion chamber is
sound. I still don't know where this one is leading. Maybe I'll go camping
next year.

My wife tells me that she's going to donate the GMC to charity as a fathers
day present !!!
