I'll trade my Ragussa step for one of these if anyone is interested or has a
used one to sell.

The structure and mechanism of that step is very simple. If you like, I'll
make some close-up pictures and take dimensions so you can make one.
I did modify mine slightly with a new step surface and rollers to replace
the sliding action of the original.

I don't have a source for the vacuum cylinder, which is a particularly nice
one, but I'm sure a cruise control cylinder can be used. Or, one could
easily use an air pressure cylinder and solenoid valve instead. The
suspension system could easily provide the supply.

Just a thought. Let me know.

Ken,

With my knees heading south and replacement in the
very near future, that is a mod I would love to have.
If you would send the info to me, I would be most
appreciative. If possible I will make a cad drawing
for the net.

The one that I had years ago on my Dodge Travco motorhome didn't use
a vacuum cylinder but it used a rubber diaphragm servo just a bit
larger than the one on the GMC cruise control for the throttle.

With the interest expressed already, I'll certainly take the pictures &
dimensions -- probably tomorrow.

Jim, I think it would really be great if you can make CAD drawings. I'm
sure Gene or bdub will be glad to post them.

Blaine Merrill, if you're on: Do you have any 1" diameter nylon rod? With
a 3/8" axial hole would be perfect. One of the modifications I made to the
original design was to eliminate all sliding friction by putting a 1" long
by 1" diameter nylon roller at the end of each swing arm. Since I had only
a little in my junk box, I don't have a source to offer anyone.

I've never even examined one of those closely, but I did talk to Ken Rose
about them at our Lakepoint rally. He's now using a microprocessor
controller instead of limit switches. He'd probably sell you one of those
to go with your step. From his description of its operation (timed
operation, not position sensing -- which I'm not enthusiastic about, by the
way) it should not require any physical changes to the step.

I also use the Rose 'Swing-away' step. It uses a GM power window motor
and gear box. I got a spare motor from my local 'recycler' for $15.
Works Great!!

Thanks Ken,

I remember looking at yours first hand, and have wanted one since. I had
already booked marked your pics before reading your offer. As soon as I
finish installing the million dollar cockpit, I will get with you if I have
not built one the easy way. I get tired of forgetting about the step, or
twisting my ankle on the closed step. We stop and go to much to use the
Ragussa One.

| We stop and go to much to use the Ragussa [step].

About 8 years ago my wife twisted her ankle on our folded Ragusa step.
Since then, we have always left it in the unfolded position. It
really doesn't stick out very far and has never been a problem. If I
ever did wipe it out though, a replacement step is a lot cheaper than
a broken ankle.
Gotta protect my hiking buddy.
