Engine water pump supplier

I've been through all the previous post for the water pump model numbers. Unfortunately those model numbers don't seem to be avail with the cast iron
impeller, with the backing, at 4 1/4" diameter. A lot of stamped impellers but their diameters look to be less than 4".

Any suggestions on where to find a high quality water pump to fit the 455? Or are they no longer available, so go Chinese? I hope not....

You can never go wrong in ordering those type of parts from JimK. Things like water pumps, fan clutches, alternators. I’ve never gotten anything from Jim that was of poor quality or did not fit the first time. You might have to pay a couple of extra bucks but you only cry once. Plus, Jim’s advice is always free.

That is my backup plan if I can't find one with the cast iron impeller. Appears by his pictures that his impeller is stamped vs cast iron.
Maybe I'm being too picky.

Call me a Luddite, but I consider the cast impeller to be no more desirable
than the stamped. Fact is, I've even had good luck with the AutoZone
severe duty pumps, even when running them backward with a serpentine belt.
I did some flow testing for Leigh Harrison when he was designing a reverse
rotation pump for that purpose, using an expensive flow gauge he provided.
It's doubtful that anyone could tell the difference between the iron and
sheet metal impellers (or 4-1/4" vs 4") without such instrumentation. If
you have a cooling problem, it's probably NOT the non-leaking water pump.

Thanks Ken. No cooling problems on my coach.
I'm just getting ready for a engine swap, and I want every thing on the new engine to be 100%.
That's why I'm being extra careful. I would hate to crack a new engine because of a relitivily inexpensive part.
I am even going to put in a new radiator even thogh the old one seems ok. I'm just anal that way..

One thing you do wan tto check - you want a pump with eoller bearings in front. Many are ball bearings front and back, for heavy servic e - zillion
pound fan - get one with the rollers in front and balls in back.

Gateway has pumps with 4" cast impeller. I have one as a spare.

You can remove your original 4.25" impeller and put it on a reman pump. Done that twice.

I agree with Johnny on the Ball Roller Bearing. The Ball / Roller
configuration triples the radial load carrying ability.

The Original Bearing used in our Pumps was an NSK 885858........885
signifies ball/ball. Later a 665858 was developed.....Ball/Roller.
NSK no longer makes any water pump (integral shaft) bearings. They sold
the product line.

I have found recently that Auto Zone advertises a Ball/Roller version for
our pumps. The part #*L58-295H is said to have upgraded to a ball /roller.
I ordered one and it came with an bearing end stamped with an NSK 858 with
no prefix, either 885 or 665. I later found that an "R" in front of the
858 would have signified It was a ball/roller. The pump I received had no
such marking...only NSK 858. So I cannot confirm what bearing they are
using without removing the bearing grease seal making it unusable or
returnable. **I'll keep digging and report back.*

*However, A company in Cleveland makes a NEW water pump for our Coaches.

Looks to be a good US Source for our Water pump Supply stream and uses a
ball/roller bearing and all new components,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but pricey.

Open the box in the store and look at it. I put on a tech seminar on water
pumps at our Christmas Rally this last year. I ordered one pump from Jim
K., and bought 4 more locally using the exact same part number. I wound up
with 5 different pumps, 2 of which came in identical boxes. Two wouldn't
work at all for our application in the motor home with the fan and clutch
we use.
Just sayin'.

See Tom Pryor's post on the subject, he's done a lot of research into the situation. Having lost the front bearing on my short coach I can tell you -
you don't wanna do that. That was what cost me and Jazz a day at RD's Service in Gastonia. Pics (of RDs) in the photo site.

I bought a cheap high volume pump from pro-comp, for sure Chinese, but it did hold up when I did run in my new engine (a lot of heat)and it is dirt
cheap, I have no idea of how long it will work but I guess I will find out and are not to worried, the build quality was actually pretty good, of
course no cast iron impeller but I am pretty sure that the high volume design will keep up anyways

The concern isn't so much moving water as the front bearing failing from side load - weight of the fan and clutch. When mine failed it spit the belts
and tore up the pulley at the same time. As far as we could tell from salvage yards around that part of the Carolinas, the pulley is common only to
the GMC. We had to have a machine shop weld it back together and true it.

Hey Johnny,

I've been searching for water pumps with the roller bearings in the front and ball bearings in the rear.
So far I have only found one. It's called Tuff Stuff made here in the USA at around $80.

Jim K also has a real nice aluminum hi volume water pump at around $130. I need to call him to find out its bearing design.

I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel!

Changing impellers without dynamically balancing the assembly is a good way to create vibration and premature failure. I would not recommend it.
