Engine Size

Hello all -

I am new to the mailing list and have been reading the digests for about two weeks. I am thinking of purchasing a GMC MH sometime in the future. My question has to do with engine size. Is the 455 a better engine for heavy-load conditions, such as would be encountered in the mountains pulling a towed vehicle, as compared to the 403 engine? Sorry if this has been discussed before - just trying to decide which engine to look for in a potential MH purchase. Appreciate any leads to good GMC's for sale. Thanks.

Welcome to the list! At the rpm these engines operate at, the difference in
hp & torque between the 455 and 403 is minimal. The 403 actually is a
little more fuel efficient. There's more "stuff" available for the 455, but
you'll find at least one of anything you could want for the 403 if you look
long enough. And, as has been pointed out here, there's even a factory port
fuel injection manifold available for the 403, something you won't find for
the 455.

Don't let a good 403 stop you from buying a coach.

Hi Randy,

Welcome! If the engine size is important to you I can send you the VIN n
umbers for the last 455s but in my opinion the difference isn't really
significant.

You may find late 77s and 78s with 455 engines due to replacement
somewhere in the coach's history.

I will send you a note off-line about the Registry and its purpose. Pls
send me data on any coaches you look at. BTW, I show there are 8 Oklahoma
coaches for sale.
