engine serial number

In Australia we have to get an engineer to certify that a vehicle meets the Australian design code for the year of manufacture
yesterday i got this certification. this only certifies that the coaches design is correct not that it is of acceptably road worthiness

my next stage is to get a road worthy certificate one of the things i will need is the engine serial number not the casting number
the number that is unique to every engine and is usually stamped into the block

can someone point me into the correct location on a 1976 455

Sir: it should be stamped in the oil fill tube that is pressed in the timing cover. It is hard to find. On car engines there is a pad on drivers
side block below the head with last 6 digits of vin.

I found the pad but there are no numbers stamped on it. I assume these were machined off when the engine was rebuilt. I need to stamp new numbers In
the pad so I assume this number should start with T6V followed by the last 6 digits of my vin
T for GMC manufacturing division
6 for my year of manufacture
V for manufacturing plant code

Trevor, your serial number is on the OIL FILL TUBE. IT is difficult to
find, but it is there. You might have to use some carb cleaner,
scotchbrite, and elbow grease to find it, but it is there. Good lighting
helps a whole lot, too.

To the best of my knowledge the motorhome had no numbers stamped on the pad. Only car application had the numbers. The engines and transmissions
were built by Oldsmobile for GMC truck division with no egr system, among other things, and extra stuff in the tranny for the Motorhome only.

In my research on Norris built Crestmonts that were outfitted in Bean Station Tenn by Midas, I talked to an old man that says he worked there when
they were outfitted. He swares at least one of the NEW GMCs that came in to be fitted had a 500 Caddy motor in it. I have no proof, only his word.
