Which 455 automobil engines are good candidates as replacement
engines in the GMC motorhome

My assumptions are :

>.1972 to early 1977 455 Toranado and Eldorado - because these
engines had the harden value seats.
>.Oil pans need to be changed to the 6 quart GMCMH style
>.Carb jets are different for the GMCMH

My questions are:

>.Are the heads the same?
>.Is the intake manifold the same?
>.Are the exhaust manifolds the same?
>.Are the Alt/P.S/A/C bracket the same ?
>.Does the GMCMH use any heavier duty parts --like timing chain
and oil pump than what was used in the car?
>.Are the 455 engines that were used in some rear wheel drive
GMC products OK to use?
>.Is the caddy 502? an exact replacement -- no modifications?
>.Any other problems/concerns/modifications?

All 455 toronado engines from 1966-1976 are candidates, although some 425 CI
engines have different lifter angles and lifter sizes. All cranks can be
used in all blocks as long as the corresponding pistons are used. All olds
455 blocks are usable no matter where they came from.
All toronado 455's have the same oil pan

Carb jets are consistent with carb #

All heads will fit all 455's although some of them will have to have valve
seats installed. there is a special valve seat required that most shops do
not have, be careful when having them installed.

toronado intakes are all alike, other 455 manifolds cannot be used on the GMC

All internal parts to 455's are the same except for the addition of windage
trays for toronados, and length of oil pump pick ups in toronados

the caddy is a direct replacement if you also use all of the caddy brackets
for alternator etc

To elaborate, it's a height problem. If you want to do surgery on your
engine cover(see Heinz's site) you can use any 455 intake.

I understand that you'll get a real "earfull" if you mention the caddy
to Joe Mondello. I'd stick with the Olds.

And from me also. there is no comparison in longevity of the two engines.
the olds has nickle in varying amounts in the blocks and that makes them
extra tough and long wearing.
