I've been trying to find information on engine/tranny rebuilds .
I've heard of a place called Winterfeldts but can't locate a web site to
find out more info.
Any one know of other rebuilds, or web sites, and what is offered in
customizing options?
Currently my '73 455 is getting 10mpg and however at 106,000 it
uses 1qt. oil every 500 miles.
I would like to do a rebuild eliminating unseen "on the road"
problems with a 106,000 mile motor AND reduce/eliminate oil consumption.

Thanks for any help.

You can call Winterfeldt @303-530-4995, he is in Longmont CO. 10 MPG is
fairly good for a GMC with a 455, most would kill for that. As for a qt
of oil every 500 miles that is really not to bad either. Most GMC'ers
do change out the timing chain at around 100 K as a precaution.

J.R. said it "good". That was what I was thinking when I saw your post,

A fellow by the name of Jim Statkus, in Albuq, will do a great job for
about 2850 if you send him the motor. Call him at 505-765-1614. He did
mine and I am very happy. Winterfeld is outside of Boulder, Number
303-530-4995. He actually has rig and will come to your site and within 6
hours install a new engine. He has it all worked out.

Hope that helps.

Are they doing anything exotic, or as an upgrade to the engine, or just a
stock rebuild? I have a shop here in Texas that quoted me $850.00 (thats
eight hundred fifty, no typo there) to do a full long-block rebuild on the
Olds 455 as implemented in the GMC (they are familiar with the GMC, and
have done several, so I think that this quote is valid.) This is the machine
work - much as for the shop you mention, you still have to pull it and get it
to them. I have not done my GMC yet, but they just did my Toyota pickup, and
the work appears to be first rate. It is Andersons Machine Shop in Lewisville,
Texas. I don't have the number handy at the moment, but I beleive that they
have an 800 number, and hence 800 directory assistance should get you the info.

If anyone wants more info, let me know, and I will dig it up.

I have some info on my web site on what can be done to the engine.

Look under engine and search for rebuild

Tim, If I remember correctly, Alex Sirums routine is to bore the engine 30
thousandths and install an R.V. cam, however, you will have to talk to him
directly about how you want your engine built.

Tim,
What parts are included in the long block rebuild? The most inexpensive
that I have been able to price out with me doing all the assembly work
is about 1700 dollars. That included turning the crank and align hone,
rebushing and resizing the rods, new pistons and rings balancing the
assembly. cleaning the block, boring having the heads surfaced, RV cam
shaft, roller tip rockers and a complete valve job using the Olds harden
valve seats if necessary, welding up the exhaust crossover, gasket set
and various misc. parts and extra machine work. $2850 from the guy in
New Mexico is a average price to do the engine right. You can pay more
from Mondello or Winterfeldt but those are bullet proof motors for the
most part.

All internal parts are either remanufactured or replaced. No new exotic parts
go in - all are OEM, although they may put in an alternate cam or such if you
provide it, although I have not asked. Distributor, carb, etc. are reused, and
if they have a problem, they charge extra - the base price assumes that all
engine components external to the block are reusable as-is. I doubt that the
stock price would plug the exhause crossover, since that is a stock design item,
but they may do it - you would have to ask.

I suggest you call - they have an 800 number, (but, once again, I don't have
it handy, but 800 directory assistance should have it for you. The address
is on McKenzie St. in Lewisville TX.) and talk to Larry - he is the one that
I discussed this with when I was setting up the work on my truck.

Thanks every one for the great help and quick reply's on the engine
rebuild
questions I had.
I will do a diagnostic and replace what should be done at over 100k
miles.
Thanks again of giving me the opportunity to save some cash.
