This question is for those that have recently had the adapter plate off
to replace the gasket.

(I am presently viewing figure 4 on page Engine 6A-27 as
referance.in the maint. manual)

I pulled the entire adapter plate and oil lines off to change the
gasket between the adapter plate and the oil filter base. I intend to
replace the flex hoses as they were last replaced in 1986. 14 years ago.

How often should they be replaced? I will replace with -8 hoses.
When I removed the "extension" it came out very easy, too easy, as the
gasket was very hard, brittle, and compressed. This was my very reason
for changing it. (piece of mind)
The diagram in the book does not show or mention a o-ring on the
"extension", but there is a groove as if one should be there. And
finally to the question...
Should there be an o-ring on the top side of the extension fitting or
was it just machined this way to confuse us?
If there is an o-ring what is the size/dimension.

Regards, Gil

Gil,
I change my adapter gasket every other oil change. The save rubber
gasket on the filter and reuse for the adapter. It will fit right in the
groove. There is no O-ring on the extension nut. The oil filter and
adapter gaskets are the only one.

As for oil lines there are alot of opinions on how long to use the stock
type hose oil lines. If I was to keep the stock style line I would
probably change them every 50K miles or every 4 years and I am sure that
there are other ranges that will be suggested.

The real deal for the oil lines is the stainless steel replacement lines
that are a one time bullet proof deal. Cost is a little over $120 but
you have peace of mind. J.R. Slaten who is a GMC Netter make and sells
the set for the 403 and the 455 motor. First quality items. The choice
is really yours
