Arch,
Your note got me thinking, misters such as you desire are used in produce
dept's of grocery stores. You might check out a used grocery equipment
dealer to find some relatively cheeeep! Just an idea.

The mister idea isn't bad. Mine has never run hot though. But, a 12 Volt
water pump and a piece of SS tubing w/0.003" holes? Just a thought. Pin
hole the garden hose would be next. One could use condensation. Several
years ago when my van overheated in FL I just pulled the wind shield washer
hose off and ran over in front; as the temp went up I would give it several
shots manually. So there a half dozen ways to get there. Air pressure on an
air receiver 2/3 full of water. Mother is the necessity of invention.

Guys if your radiator and cooling system is working correctly a mister is a
waste of time.Why not spend the money where it needs to be spent.

You'd better make sure you use SOFT water or you will soon coat the rad fins
with calcium and the other minerals that make water HARD. I considered
doing this to boost the efficiency of my two home condenser coils until I
hit this problem.

I just thought about that on the spur of the moment when I went to the site.
Misters, fine mist is different than what I was thinking. As for fire, do
believe I would want high pressure and fast.

Are you getting used to retirement yet? Doesn't take much to get used to
not getting ready to go to work on Monday morning. Mondays take on a whole
different attitude, like, heeeeelllllloooooooooo Monday, got a whole new
week to play with.{:>)

Having a GMC is sort of like going to a garage sale. One man's
junk is another man's treasure...or something like that. As applies
to GMC's I guess we would say that one man's "waste of time"
is another man's "we might go where no man has gone before."

I don't think that anything related to our GMC's is a waste of
time if we want to do it. In my mind my GMC is a hobby.
Something for me to do when I don't want to think about my
business or other things. I think that a number of other people
would think that my current project (new headliner and shades)
is a waste of time because I'm adding extra things like
network cable for future computers, extensive cable TV outlets,
DVD and CD players, central VCR and speakers in the ceiling.

I mean no offense to Tom by being critical of his term "waste
of time". For him it would be a waste of time to add a mister,
but for others it wouldn't be. I'm sure Tom has done a few things
that could be considered a waste of time by others in the group, but not
by him. I say this with a smile.

We have these GMC's to have fun, and for some of us, having fun
includes wasting time.

I mean no disrespect to anyone, this is just my opinion. And as always,
we must be careful of what we say and how we say it, least we offend
someone accidently.

Thus ends my Sunday night sermon.

I am sure you will report on it when it does help you thru that hot spot,
and making sure you filter the water so as to reduce the solids build up.

While putting in a new ceiling, I wired my coach for cable and ran an extension to
the bedroom and I thought I was doing big things......

You lost the intention of my response entirely,in an effort to defend your
viewpoint. Why add a mister unless you have tested every part of the
cooling system and concluded that everything works as designed? Have you
actually used the coach and found overheating to be a problem Arch? Thats my
problem with your idea assuming that something is deficient before you even
encounter it. And another thing have you compared the negative aspects of
misting? And yes there are always trade offs to everything.

The GMC cooling system is a very robust one. Can it be made better? Sure. I
am adding a transmission cooler, but aside from that it needs nothing unless
it does overheat in hard pulling. I don't think it will.

I have no problem with anything you want to do with your coach. it is
indeed my hobby, and if anyone saw the piles of new parts ready to install
on mine, they would question my sanity in a minute. But except for the
exhaust headers, everything is going back to original condition before I
start to improve anything.

EAch of us is going to modify our coach to suit our individual tastes.
This is what truly makes the GMC motorhome unique, and the fact that it is
the only fully supportable 20 year old coach still on the road.

Anyone have a problem with overheating with a properly functioning cooling
system? Or is this just another myth.

Hi Arch, This could be a good idea!!! Was talking to one of my friends in
CA. about my (I think) heating problems, and he told me about a family
member in N.M. that used a porous water bag hanging in front of his radiator
during times of boil over this was back in the old days and he said it
helped but he did not have info on bag, but was going to ask family back
there if they had any info on the bag? Hey! in over heating times besides
stopping, any assistance I would think is better!!! Whats yours is yours
and if anything works you know others would use when needed!!!! You never
know unless you try!!!! Keep on the look out!!!! and keep the old sweet lady
rolling!!!!

When I moved here three months ago I had a softener in stalled (salt., H20
real bad here,along with heat), And since there was alot of Calcium/what
ever buildup on evap. cooler I was going to switch to soft water. Asked
local guru's about it and they said the salt would do more damage to cooler
and to leave with unsoften water just drain/wash out with CalciumLimeRust
after a few uses. Just thought.

this idea of misting the cooling system has been areound for some time. If
anyone has some old issues of FMCA magazines, you may find some discussions
about it in the Tech pages. I just bought 6 portable misters from QVC (Ithink)
to use on the professional football players that I am the trainer for, during
hot practices and hot games. The mister also came with a long tube with several
sprayers that could be attached to an umbrella. To activate the sprayers, you
fill a container with water, screw on the top, pump it up and turn a lever to
start and stop the spray. You could do that from inside the coach for a while
to see if it works. I payed less than $20 each for the ones I bought and
someone probably is selling them at the flea market for less than that.

We used them in New Mexico while working in the field. They were made of
canvas and did leak a little bit continuously - kept the water cool.

Despite the naysayers this is a very valid concept. What I think most are
missing is that water of course can be a medium to which you could
transfer heat. The example would be just putting a hose with a good flow
over the radiator. The heat is transferred to the water and the water and
heat runs away.

BUT there is much more than that. When water evaporates it takes a lot of
heat to perform that process. In low humidity climates the cooling effect
of evaporation is very effective. Misting the air stream in advance of the
radiators and AC Condensor etc. will in fact vastly lower the air
temperature which will of course allow a faster exchange of heat to the
air. In the right climate a mist system that was instlled far enough in
front of radiator, prehaps right in the grille would mean that no liquid
water would actually pass through the radiator, just cooler air and water
vapour. Of course minerals and contaminents would not vaporize but would be
added to the air stream but without the water medium they would be more
like dust than mud.

B TW The post concerning a porous canvas bag in front of the radiator was
on track. However the real purpose was to allow some of the water to
evaporate and cool the water in the bag. Although it would cool some air
aorund it the amount of water available and the leech rate was not
sufficent to make any signifigant difference to radiator cooling. However
sure was handy when it boiled over.

In the 70's JC Whitney sold a kit to spray water on the radiator. It was
not sophisticated it used a windhield washer pump and rather course nozzels
like windshild squirters. You needed an RV water tank or large tank because
it would use about 1 qt per minute. BUT I had a defective radiator core
(turns out the fins had lost the solder bond to the tubes) and when the
ambient temperature went up the engine temp woulkd climb. Hit the switch
and it dropped like a rock. It was not necessary to run it continually.

Finally in more humid climates the misting effect to cool the air is
greatly reduced. In very high humidities only high water flow rate would
reaaly be effective.
